Below, you’ll find departures, additions and offers that have been publicized for this year’s cycle.
Departures
QB | J.J. Kohl – The former four-star prospect, and an Elite 11 quarterback during his prep years, will enter the portal with three years of eligibility left. He saw just two snaps on the field during the 2024 season.
OL | A.J. Burton – A signee to the 2024 recruiting class that spent one year as an offensive lineman with the program. The 6-foot-5, 290-pound player will have all four years of eligibility remaining.
DE | Tyler Onyedim – The most productive departure for Iowa State in the portal. Onyedim announced Saturday, December 21 that he would play elsewhere during his final year on the field.
DE | Trent Jones II – A defensive edge rusher that spent the last four seasons, that started as a walk-on and ended on scholarship. He’ll have one year of eligibility remaining.
DE | Kenard Snyder – A linebacker turned defensive end before coming to Iowa State from Louisiana Monroe. Had 8 tackles, 2 TFL’s and 2 sacks in 2024.
LB | Jacob Ellis – A walk-on turned scholarship linebacker, Ellis totaled 41 tackles for the Cyclones and appeared in all 13 games during the 2024 season.
DB | Trevon Howard – A defensive back originally out of IMG Academy that spent the last three seasons with the Cyclones. Had four tackles during the 2024 season.
DB | Ryan Robinson Jr. – a defensive back that transferred to Iowa State after spending his freshman year at LSU will transfer as a redshirt freshman. He has three years of eligibility remaining.
KOS | Keegan Shackford – a kickoff specialist who spent the last four seasons in Ames, has entered the portal looking for a new spot for his graduate year.
LS | Drake Knoblach – a longsnapper who spent the last three seasons in Ames, enters the portal with two seasons of eligibility remaining.
Additions
WR | Xavier Townsend, UCF

Two years eligibility remaining
Formerly an Iowa State commit, and a friend of Rocco Becht’s, Townsend spent each of his first three seasons at UCF. He pulled out of this season and redshirted after four games to save himself a year of eligibility. Caught four passes for 50 yards and a touchdown against Colorado and was also used in the run game frequently at UCF. Averaged 7.3 yards per carry on 12 carries this season.
WR | Chase Sowell, East Carolina

Started his career at Colorado during Deion Sanders’ first season, and ended up at East Carolina after Sanders cleaned house. Was ECU’s second leading receiver with 34 catches for 678 yards and three touchdowns.
DE | Cannon Butler, UNI

One year of eligibility remaining
A captain for the Panthers during his final year in Cedar Falls, with one year remaining. Collected 59 tackles and 1.5 sacks last season.
DE | Vontroy Malone, Tulsa

Two years of eligibility remaining
Announced his commitment on the same day Iowa State lost Onyedim to the portal. Had 25 tackles along with two sacks and a forced fumble for Tulsa in 2024.
DB | Tre Bell, Lindenwood

Two years of eligibility remaining
Had 24 tackles, an interception and six pass breakups this season. Would be more of a developmental add for the Cyclones, but has not used his redshirt season yet, either.

Had 16 tackles, including five tackles for loss for 20 yards as well as four sacks for the same amount during his last year at Washington State.
