What are your thoughts about LinkedIn?

I do like the idea of LinkedIn and still like it for keeping up with former and current colleagues. Also, things that are going on in the industry. Certainly a lot of ads/self promotion. Guess that’s what happens. What really bothers me is people posting crap that should be on facebook or kept to themselves. Son graduated from college, cool thing happened on my way to the grocery store, dog had puppies. Happy for you all but really DGAF. I’m not on any social media for that reason. Don’t invade LinkedIn with your ****!

I actually got my current job because of LinkedIn. I was in the field they needed and being an ISU grad really caught their attention. Be 4 years in spring and I don't plan on leaving. I wasn't even looking for anything new.
I really rarely use LinkedIn as I think it's kind of dumb but has its uses for sure.

Same for me. I was contacted, interviewed a few times, given a job offer, and then at the very end of the hiring process, they realized I hadn't actually applied yet.

So it worked out for me, I suppose.

I love being a top applicant for a bunch of random jobs that have nothing to do with my career skills.
It is amazing how many texts I receive from recruiters stating that after viewing my LinkedIn profile I am a top applicant for their current positions.

I have never had a LinkedIn account.

It's not bad for job hunting. Also the execs at my past two companies were very active on it, so you kinda have to play the game and like the stuff that they post about the company. I check it every day, but beyond congratulating former colleagues on promotions and job changes, it's kind of lame.

Don't have my own account but I find it handy to look up who people are and what company they work for.

I’ve gotten my last three jobs from LinkedIn. I find it useful for looking for jobs, but also have a lot of recruiters that reach out, which is nice as it most often leads to a first round interview.

I’ve also started using the learning module a little bit and find it decent, but look forward to other modules.

Every once in awhile I get a call that goes like this.

“Hey, this is (inset name here) from (insert recruiting business here). I see your resume on LinkedIn and I think you would be a great fit for an agronomy sales job that is located in (inset random state). Would love to chat more and hear more about your background. Look forward to hearing back from you.”

Never mind that
a) I haven’t updated my LinkedIn in 10 years
b) Haven’t logged in my account for probably 5+ years
c) left said field and in a completely unrelated field for the last 6+ years.

I think the posts are incredibly cringey.

But I do like looking people up on there who I have to work with or candidates who apply to jobs. That, and browsing the job board on the shitter is all I use it for.

Flaming pile of dogcrap. Professional version of Facebook. Lazy sales people using it for call sheets and "influencers" peddling e-books. I wish Microsoft would crack down on the garbage so it can actually be used as a professional contact tool, but all they care about is engagement.
Comment "CLARITY" below and I'll hook you up with my free e-book and 10-day course on how to filter your LinkedIN feed.

In all seriousness...I check it daily. Its decent for industry news and I've made a useful connection here or there in real-life. There's a lot of cringe on there. If someone in my network posts something overtly political, I immediately remove the connection. That seems to have worked pretty well.

I'd say the best thing that came of it was when I joined my current company which is very large; 7,000 employees. One random day about 3 months after I started, I get a Teams call from a Senior VP at my company who sits in Seattle and I've never met. I had connected with him and liked several of his posts. He reached out to introduce himself and share that we went to the same place for our MBA. That was pretty cool.

I have a few coworkers who post/repost quite a bit and the stuff is all clearly self promotion and nothing remotely related to what they actually work on. Hyping up AI stuff when in reality they're developing on top of a code base that's ancient.

Still a useful tool and I always promptly update whenever I get promoted and keep it up to date with my resume. Never know when a recruiter might reach out with an enticing job.

I've had LinkedIn since basically its inception. I keep it updated, but don't post much. I find it a great source for some C-level thoughts, industry trends, etc. But lately my feed seems to be a bunch of pats on the back or somewhat cringey ego boosts or hollow praise of colleagues. Dunno, maybe I just don't use it enough.

I still think it's a great place for job searching, networking, etc. Huge value from those standpoints. The shift, to me, from “professional network” to also “content network” means more posts intended for visibility/ego than purely useful content. The platform is professionally-oriented, so I get that people feel compelled to present their wins, accomplishments, growth-stories...and that's fine. But sometimes and much more often lately it seems like “look how far I’ve come” mode.

I used to scroll my feed for industry trends and insights but those are long gone by and large and it's just personal updates and promotions...which is great, I'm happy for them, I just don't use the platform for that.

Curious what people use it for, if at all.
Useful for recruiters to find you and reach out with potential job opportunities.
