I think you guys are assuming order of operation and not that this is a sequence. If it had an equal sign at the end and didn’t have individual spaces beneath for the answer following each step sequence then...

It says "solve the equation". They inaccurately put spaces underneath and start off "solving" the equation without using the standard rules of math. Order of operations matters.
And for what it's worth, they put the equal sign on the second line. That STILL doesn't make it an accurate "solve".
