John Prine dead at 73

Here's a link from a performance back in the late 90s (same year I saw him) and it's wonderful listening to him interact with the crowd. It's what I remember most about his show.

Would that have been before or after he had throat cancer? In interviews he would talk about how after the surgery his voice sounded different and in his opinion, better. I tend to agree. I like his earlier stuff but I think his singing voice post-cancer had a little more grit and not quite as much twang, and his music was the better for it.

Right before it.
I saw him in November 1997.
His voice was really gruff, so the throat cancer diagnosis wasn't a surprise.

Sweet Revenge is my favorite Prine album, last night I threw on my illegal smile and had a few beers, I think I listened to entire album 3 times back to back. Lyrically, I'm not sure there's ever been anyone better.

Been Listening to him since I heard the news yesterday morning. Such a great song writer and folk artisit. I read a quote from Bonnie Raitt on him back when I first got into his music that I think described my feelings towards him to a T.

"He’s a true folk singer in the best folk tradition, cutting right to the heart of things, as pure and simple as rain"
