Friday OT #3 - Like A Fine Wine

Back to the Future

It's honestly the perfect movie. Even today if I see that movie playing on tv, I'll end up watching it.. and probably 2 and 3 after.

I was going to say this too! Especially the 2nd one is funny now to see just how close or far off they were predicting what 2015. They were just 1 year off on the Cubs winning the World Series and even in 2015 they came a series away from making it.

Another one that holds up I think is Road House. Three Kevin Costner baseball movies that I think still hold their own today if you never had watched them before are Field of Dreams, Bull Durham, and For The Love of The Game

That was on the other day and man alive is it perfectly cast.

I go back and forth but George McFly might be the most interesting character.

Just my own list of a few things I did not see on here previously...

The Godfather
The Godfather: Part II

Both are timeless and inarguably two of the greatest films ever made.

A lot of historical and science fiction films are aging well because of the profundity and timelessness of their ideas, the quality of the performances and directing, and good special effects. Not being set in a nondescript "present" that is always changing probably helps a film remain relevant in ways a lot less ambitious films probably cannot.

Few examples of that...

Lawrence of Arabia
The Bridge on the River Kwai
The Fall of the Roman Empire
Blade Runner
The Thing
Forbidden Planet
Patton
Ben-Hur
Alien/s
The Terminator/2
Gladiator

Everything from Kubrick's catalog (e.g., Spartacus, Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Full Metal Jacket, etc.) qualify. I think the satires of Hollywood and popular culture generally by Mel Brooks (e.g., Spaceballs, Young Frankenstein, The Producers, History of the World: Part I, Blazing Saddles, etc.) only become funnier and more relevant over time.

Rob Reiner went on a heck of an underappreciated run in the late 80s and early 90s...

This is Spinal Tap
Stand by Me
The Princess Bride
When Harry Met Sally...
A Few Good Men

All of those are great and timeless.

Agree basically. Except the bit about "Pepsi Free" and "Tab". Nobody under 45 knows what that is.

"Urban Cowboy"

Every time, all the time. Bud and Sissy. "She gave me the fanger, I gave her the fanger... I guess it's over, I don't know."
First date with future DH was to see this movie.

A Bridge Too Far.
A commentary on egos, grand plans, success, futility, and the collapse of the "second D-Day", Operation Marketgarden. Peppered with famous faces that somehow DON'T take you out of the story.

An American President.
Romance, politics, current events, and ooooohhhhh that Sorkin dialogue. <3

Alien.
Brooding, gory without being TOO gory, perfect build of tension, excellent characters with a competent, dominant female lead...and the perfect tag-line: In space, no one can hear you scream.

It Happened One Night.
Madcap romantic comedy at its finest, especially when Colbert & Gable try to teach each other how to hitchhike.

White Christmas.
Bing & Danny. Rosemary & Vera Ellen. Singing, dancing, romance, comedy, heartstring tugs (We'll follow the old man wherever he wants to go) - it's an annual event for me, and last year we actually saw it at a big screen revival in Ames.
