Elephants 1 , Big Game Hunter 0

Remind me again, why would you pay $50K to hunt a hog in a rain forest? Are we looking at the Darwin Award winner?

I think most people empathize with animals in some form. For example, people who kill animals would prefer the animals not suffer during their death while others would prefer them not killed at all.

I also think most people understand there are legitimate, productive reasons to kill animals; be it for food, disease, overpopulation, etc.

Third, most people would say the gratuitous killing of animals should be avoided. "Live and let live."

Now, there isn't universally agreed upon criteria which differentiates a productive, legitimate killing versus a gratuitous one. Its a continuum. But, it seems to me, flying tens of thousands of miles and spending hundreds of thousands of dollars (over the hunter's lifetime) to seek out and kill specific animal species is gratuitous in nature.
