It's early, but based on what we're seeing in bowls so far, the American doesn't look so great. Tulane was favored against Nevada and lost by double digits, and now UCF, a slight underdog to BYU, is getting absolutely destroyed.
 
Tulane 3 starting DL, among others, opted out of bowl game. Invalid.
People digging deep will understand things like players opting out, but for casual fans looking at just results and people making decisions like the committee and future members it doesn't help the conference's perception.

In UCF's case, I think they are missing some players but BYU is abusing them on both sides of the ball. That's just adding to the point about playing in a P5 conference. You need the depth on your team to make it through a whole P5 season. UCF had Cincy all but beat and that's one of the Bearcats' marquee wins. BYU is making them look like Kansas.

This. ISU was without multiple OL and DL at different points throughout the season and still went 8-1 in the Big 12.
