Thinking about moving out of Iowa

Colorado Springs winters are awesome. Way milder than Iowa. Lived there for three winters and there was maybe one week where it was really cold and snow stayed on the ground. Usually it would snow a lot of days, but typically melted the same day with highs reaching 40-50. Basically summer was...

Thinking about moving out of Iowa

State taxes need to be part of the evaluation of a place, but yeah, I don't get people putting this at the top of the list. In the most extreme cases state income taxes go from 0 to what, maybe 9%? That's obviously important, but by the time you weigh in things like housing, insurance, other...

Thinking about moving out of Iowa

I think that's a pretty good call, but I tend to prefer some of the NC towns vs. Virginia. Maybe I didn't have a good impression because driving by Richmond a couple years ago on the way to OBX I saw the biggest flag of any kind in my life, and it was not an American Flag. I still have my top...

Thinking about moving out of Iowa

I love the Twin Cities too. I don't mind winter, but it's a little much there. While I love all the things to do, one thing I always kind of forget until I spend time in a city is that it's pretty hard to do much of anything without crowds, waits, etc. Not a big deal, but whether it's living...

    In Memoriam: Ames Business/Restaurants

Absolute tax bracket would be 20% on the gains after the step up basis. And of course that’s only when they sell. Really not a big deal. Clearing 80-100% of the value of something given to you when you might take home 60% of your pay for actual work is pretty nice.

Thinking about moving out of Iowa

Water problems and the Great Salt Lake could be massive problems there in the real near future. It could be some catastrophic talk, but people there are getting really worried. It’s like 30% of its peak water volume, and the resulting dry bed/dust presents a real toxicity concern. SLC area is...

Thinking about moving out of Iowa

Wife and I lived in CO springs and moved back to Iowa (DM then Ames) about 15 years ago. When we were there cost of living was very good. Housing has really jumped there since, though. Regret leaving a lot. Quick drive and you’re in the mountains, about an hour to Denver activities, skiing etc...

The state really needs to step in and do some planning and assignment. You can have some leeway on having conferences with a couple classes and different numbers of teams. It doesn’t have to be as tight as football districts. Just say conferences have some bounds like min 8 and max 12 teams...

There are kids that are 120 lbs soaking wet that can swing a -3 just fine. Agree fine for lower levels but no reason to allow it for varsity

Maybe. I’d say MVC with Xavier, Wahlert and Western Dubuque has better top end teams in 3A. RRC definitely has the most good 3A teams (since MVC is mostly 4A), and it isn’t close. We do have to basically take the western 3rd of the state in most classes and count their wins by about half. The...

I think Pleasantville being like 30 mins from Des Moines makes travel ball and other training more feasible than say schools in the lower two tiers of counties. It makes a difference. But it’s probably just a lot more of if you have tradition you get way more kids out, like you say. But when...

It's probably just resources and proximity to travel ball teams, training and facilities. It's a relatively poor part of the state that isn't exactly within an easy drive of the types of facilities and programs that kids close to the metro have.

If anybody is a baseball geek and wants to see some great players, I'd recommend either Centennial at Valley or Linn-Mar at SEP. Kid from Linn-Marr (Sarsfield) is an Arkansas commit. He can really fly and can hit. Valley has Stedman (Iowa commit) and Roemmich (Nebraska commit).

Their prior coach for a few years, Matt Torrez, I think is the guy that started recruiting in PR, DR and VZ. I think he had a connection with an academy in PR that might have also attracted some kids from DR and elsewhere. The new coach is from Oklahoma, but he recruited Iowa fairly heavily this...

They had kids from PR, the DR, Taiwan, Japan, Canada, Venezuela, and the US kids were mostly from Colorado, then scattered around various states. I never understood how these kids all end up at Indian Hills, and how coaches got these kids here. And if you are getting kids from all over the...

Another new staff this year. The last few years they would have tons of international guys and guys from around the country. They signed more Iowa guys this year. Iowa Western becoming a power, plus the others JUCOs doing better getting guys to D1 has hurt Indian Hills. Tougher place to recruit...

Sorry, not NIACC. I meant Northeast Iowa CC (NICC) west of Dubuque. Last year was their first year as a program. Then there’s also Northeastern CC in Nebraska that plays with the Iowa teams. Confusing as hell.

Iowa Central is good also. There’s definitely a big range from those teams and some of the guys on the bottom feeder teams. Marshalltown, Iowa Lakes struggle and North Iowa just started a program so they struggle too.
