    Let’s talk Jackrabbits

Beating any team by 50+ is impressive. Just like how beating New Hampshire by 15 or even DePaul by 19 isn't all that impressive, putting those two games towards the bottom of the list despite being double-digit wins.

Everyone can have different definitions of "better," but FWIW, Barttorvik's Game Score metric has the Iowa game as ISU's 4th best of the season (Link).

RECRUITING: Iowa State earns first 2025 commitment from Top 150 Ann Arbor PG Macari Moore

With the ball handling limitations of the previous two seasons and the success of multiple point guards this year, I think Otz will stick with trying to have a couple of guys on the court almost all the time who can play a capable PG. And as you said, Pierce + Moore should fit that mold very...

    2023-2024 MBB computer projections thread

One way of looking at that would be Barttorvik's game score which was mentioned a bit earlier. There have been 5 game scores of 100 this season, and Iowa State actually has 2 of them (Saturday's game and the Grambling State game). The others are... Arizona over Colorado (97-50) Houston over...

*** Official Selection Sunday Thread ***

I don't care much that we didn't get a #1 seed. I don't even care that much about ending up in UConn's region or the other matchups that aren't necessarily ideal. I'm just really bothered by Iowa State being the last #2 seed because it means that last nights win--one of the most impressive wins...

    *** Official #7 IOWA STATE vs #1 Houston Game(Day) Thread ***

On (2), I think Pav just doesn't match up well in these games against Baylor and Houston--both teams with really athletic backcourts. He'll play when the matchups allow, but otherwise Lipsey, Gilbert, Jones, and MM have enough minutes available between them to cover the 1-3 spots the whole game.

*** Official Kansas State vs #7 IOWA STATE Game(Day) Thread ***

I agree there was room for the offense to be better, but I'd say it was really only the shooting that could have been better. Battorvik had Iowa State at a 115.5 unadjusted offensive rating (2nd best since 1/1, behind TCU at home) and a 124.9 offensive rating adjusted for KSU's defense (3rd...

Does anyone here have a GIF or have the ability to make a GIF of Jerome Tang clapping? (It was some point early in the first 5-10 minutes of the second half.)

Nigel's horrible take on 90's NBA

I'm not making any comments on whether players of that era were bad or good or smart or stupid. I'm making a comment on the perception of the defense and physicality of the era. I think there might be a distorted sense of players' physicality today vs. the 90s because today there are fewer...

Nigel's horrible take on 90's NBA

Thanks for sharing. I'd agree with a lot of your conclusions. I'd also add that maybe some of the reason people view that era as so much more physical and defensive is because of the style of offense more than the style of defense. When I clicked to a random spot in the video, the first...

Nigel's horrible take on 90's NBA

I haven't listened to the podcast, but from what it sounds like, I'd agree that it wasn't a good take. However, I do think that people tend to misremember previous eras because they mainly remember the highlights, a few specific teams, or the narratives that came from those specific teams. Yes...

WBB: Cyclones versus Oklahoma Sooners at 1:30 p.m. ESPN2/ESPN+

Definitely got sped up there at the end. It looked a little bit more like some of the ISU-OU games from the previous few years. Just have to stay settled down and take care of the ball.

I'm sure you're right, but then he shouldn't be taking that many contested two-point shots (he's attempting nearly twice as many twos as threes and is 5th on the team in two-point attempts per minute). 34% from 2 is like shooting 23% from three, except it's even worse because presumably there...

*** Official #6 IOWA STATE vs Kansas State Game(Day) Thread ***

To me at least, it's much more the former. I think a notable thing is that when they were playing especially well during Big 12 play, the shooting efficiencies were generally good, but the Kansas and TCU games were the only two above a 55% effective field goal percentage. Even lately, the...

    Iowa Beat Writers

I haven't followed Iowa closely this season, so I looked up Harding's stat line to see what it was. I wasn't expecting anything too incredible, but I also wasn't expecting this: I guess that's not completely awful for a true freshman, but the only numbers there that are above average for his...

*** Official #6 IOWA STATE vs Kansas State Game(Day) Thread ***

The numbers would actually go the opposite way and say that the floor of this offense is higher than the previous two seasons, and the ceiling is similar or lower. For example, the home OU game had the worst adjusted offensive rating for Iowa State this season at 95.5, per Barttorvik. Last...

    Bigs for next year?

I agree on Jones, but a point on Watson: Baylor won the title in 2021 with a starting 4 who averaged 6 points per game, 7 rebounds, an assist, a steal, and a block, while shooting 50% from the free throw line and only attempting 6 three-point shots the entire season...

Curtis Jones is returning next year!

Yeah, it's close enough that I wonder if Robinson starting 6 of BYU's conference games could be a decider, with Jones winning by way of more of his games coming from the 6th man role (even though Robinson's starts were due to starter injuries, I believe).

Curtis Jones is returning next year!

In addition to the Big 12 website that @rosshm16 mentioned, you can also toggle full season vs. conference on Basketball Reference pages. https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/jaxson-robinson-1.html Jaxson Robinson is at 12.2 points per game in conference play (still leading the team)...

    Bigs for next year?

Yeah, he very well could be. Looking back at my post, I was probably too strong in stating Pierce over Nojus. I should have just said that I think people are underrating Pierce a bit. I think he has a good all-around game and Big 12-ready toughness. He also plays on a really talented NYC high...
