icymi - Ken Burns' American Revolution series in November

It's interesting that there hasn't really been any epic feature films about the Revolutionary War. There have been plenty about Vietnam, WWII, the Civil War. But aside from The Patriot, which I think was good but not great and was mainly fixated on one mostly fictional character/family, nothing that has been at the level of those other wars.

OK, Joe Rogan hosting Ken Burns. I don't know a thing, really, about Rogan, other than the utmost superficialty of this guy.

Burns seems to enthrall him, capture his attention and thus his imagination (as Burns captured mine).

Patriot was very good. A lot of historical issues. But still a good movie. Turn was a good tv series a few years ago.

Turn was amazing. And I did like The Patriot. Gibson's character, Benjamin Martin was fictional but it was based on Francis Marion, who was a real guy and who introduced guerilla techniques into the Colonialist fighting. The city of Marion (where I grew up) right next to CR is named after him. He was known as the "Swamp Fox", which is why they have the Swamp Fox Festival in Marion every year.

Sons of Liberty and John Adams were other really well done TV series.

John Adams was awesome. Totally forgot to mention it. Maybe the best Rev War peice (movie, tv or series) ever. Sons of Liberty was so so IMO.

The American History classes most students attend in HS when teaching about the Revolutionary War focus on Boston, Philadelphia, George Washington, Continental Congress etc. and never mention South Carolina…. Charleston specifically. The Northern Colonies had the population but South Carolina had financial resources the North did not. The Northern Colonies did not go forward until they convinced South Carolina to join them. Charleston was a major port and Carolina Gold rice was a valuable export to Europe. After the War and sometime after the government was established and running smoothly, Washington traveled to South Carolina and spent a month being feted at the homes of wealthy plantation owners where he was warmly received and thanked them for their participation. I would expect Burns to cover this aspect which has always intrigued me how it is seldom acknowledged.

A few years ago it was changed to the “Fall into Marion” festival due to the Swamp Fox’s less ideal personality traits.
