Who wrote the marital rights laws in Iowa?

Married filing jointly status on a tax return which saves a TON of money in most scenarios.

Automatic shot caller if I needed a medical call made. In theory it isnt a medical POA but if a doctor needs decisions now spouse carries a hell of a lot more weight.

No "power" struggle where I'm a roommate in a house without my name on it but asked to contribute to an asset I have no actual skin in.

Social security surviving spouse benefits.

Benefits eligibility.

I could be wrong but I believe married people as a whole experience more happiness on average than those who aren't.

Its wild but some people just want a commitment more than a boyfriend or girlfriend.

But please continue on your diatribe just because you failed while most people aren't.
I get it. I totally understand that joint filing is highly beneficial and can net someone thousands of dollars. But something has to offset you getting bent over x2 your original gains when the divorce happens. Everything in life is somewhat of a gamble.

I dont know nor care. The point is if she/he isn't on the loan than marriage shouldn't matter imo. I mean you signed the contract to own each other, you cant sign the loan to buy a damn house together? After reading through this thread youd have to be one stupid s.o.b. to get married. What can you do being legally married that you cant do being bf/gf that live together? The odds are not in yout favor. After reading through this thread its not about anything other than leveraging assets against each other. No wonder why the people I know who have been together for 20 years and even have kids together without taking the commitment of financial misery are more happy. This thread should be a ******* public service announcement. Kudos to the couples who have made it but you are truly defying the odds.
I am not on our loan because my credit at the time was pretty lousy. Should I get nothing from the house if she chooses to divorce me?

60%? My bad. I had no idea it was such a sure thing.
Apparently I read old data. New is saying now around 65% of first marriages stick and divorce rates are declining . Even lower rates of divorce are with college degreed and those who get married in mid 20s or later.

So if you get married 25 or older and both have higher education you are probably well over 80% success of staying together.

You wanna get married then? 65% chance we work out!

It seems like a lot of people who are against marriage just don't like to share. Everything in my life is ours, it's not a collection of my stuff and her stuff.

I get that a marriage ending can be the culmination of years of contempt and resentment, which makes people angry and vengeful. But if you're just constantly keeping score of what's yours and what's theirs even early on when things are good, that's not a recipie for success IMO.

I feel like the OP started this expecting everyone to come to this thread to rail against the backwoods laws of the bumpkin state of Iowa only to find out that his friend is a moron who possibly committed mortgage fraud and that this common sense law is in place in every state in the nation.
The outcome that guy is experiencing was pretty foreseeable via common sense, there's no denying that.

Of course he was, he always comes up with a question any functioning person knows the answer to. He enjoys it, and honestly it cracks me up.

This state has some ****** up laws.
News for you buddy, it's like this most if not all states. He should have filed for divorce before buying. She could give up her rights to the property with a quit claim, but I'm guessing that is unlikely. Marriage is a legal union of assets, dispite what you say all his assets are shared until he divorces.

"This country" then. And its absolute ********. The laws are antiquated and assume everyone gets married for the same reasons.

Well the rate of divorce is above 50 percent. People also tend to get petty in divorces and take things to the extreme. There are some people that use it as a meal ticket and never planned to go until death do them part. Infidelity, bad financial behaviors, on and on.
50% is a bit skewed as there are many repeat offenders, the Liz Taylor types. 50% of marriages end in divorce, but 50% of people who get married don't get divorced.
