As someone going through a divorce right now with mediation in a few weeks…this was entertaining.

Also, the courts are not and I can’t believe ever have been “backed up” hell there are family law attorneys seemingly every other block. Ask 5 people for recommendations and get 45 different names.

From your perspective you should just never get officially married. Completely fine and a personal choice. You just lose out on the financial benefits of being married, your buddy is losing out on the other end for making 2 stupid decisions in not finalizing the divorce and buying before it was finalized.

I get where your heads at but marriage is a contract between you, your spouse and uncle Sam at the end of the day.

So my buddy has been separated from his wife(not legally) for almost 2 years. His wife actually left him. He bought a place like 1 year ago in Iowa City and is now looking to sell it. His wife never lived there, never paid any equity into the house, and has never even been on the property. How in the **** is she(possibly) legally entitled to some of the money he could potentially get from the a sale in the future. Nobody but the person on the loan should be entitled to that. They had only been married like a year and a half too.

So he bought a property without a divorce????

Probably because until they divorce both of their assets are viewed as shared. So presumably when he bought the new place it was with those shared assets. Why wouldn't she be entitled to a share of the proceeds?

Likewise if she had won the lottery during the last 2 years he would probably be entitled to his half of that.

He really should have talked to an attorney before making a big investment while married. Her location is irrelevant, or at least I would assume, until told otherwise.

No. Im just saying those are bad laws. If he gets the house foreclosed on him than it should equally ruin her credit also then even though her name isn't on the loan.

They are married! You can't have laws that require determination of how "happily"

Full transparency, I bought my first Life Insurance policy cause the female agent was someone I was trying to hook up with. It was a good investment for a while.

Not the same thing but I remember having a buddy who years ago stood by one of our friend's boyfriends who had some destructive behaviors; 'he's a good guy, just a little bit of a coke and rage habit but fun to hang out with'.
