CMC's Best vs Mac/Chiz/CPR's Best

Team 2 has more talent, but are they running a 3-3 stack? Because Seneca is a QB built to ruin that scheme. And he is paired with a couple RBs that are really difficult to tackle in space. It’s a really bad matchup for the team 2 defense.

I am also not sure how team 1 stops those receivers and Breece (the best RB on either team) and Brock. He is built to distribute and that is a lot of options to throw to. He had his statically best season with Butler on the outside. And now he has Lazard too, and the TEs. Look out.

Not sure who wins, but I would love to watch and find out. First team to 50 probably. Neither of these defenses are built to stop a different era of offense.

I think you are showing your age young Grasshopper.

It's difficult to decide on Lazard, since it's two years on each, he almost feels more like a "CPR guy," but his yardage/TD impact was higher in '16/'17. I'm sure it helped somewhat that 2017 was part of a better team overall than any of the first three years.

Interesting to note, though, his yards per catch are nearly identical across all four seasons: 13.2, 13.2, 13.5, 13.3.
Blum brought this up the other day, Lazard flat out said if the rules now were the rules then, he would have transferred. He is a CPR guy.

He can make a case but I would still have TD over Breece.
Breece had the benefit of better offensive lines to run behind, and a better offensive scheme so that it wasn't all dependent on Breece.

Davis didn't have those advantages. Everyone knew he would get the ball and yet they couldn't stop him.

It is always going to be an argument on who was the best. Coming in second in the Heisman makes my decision on who was the best of the two, but that is not a knock on Breece.

Jordan Carstens would be someone to add in the Team 1 as a DT.

For as talented as the CMC team is, the OL is really underwhelming.
A case could be made Jalen Travis should probably replace Campos, but JT was only here for one year, so i went Campos here. He's probably the most talented OL in the CMC era.

Maybe I'm just an old head but I think team 1 would win by several scores. Team 2 probably has the better overall skill talent but that offensive line would get demolished so bad that the skill players would be useless (see Tampa vs KC superbowl)

I would have James Reed and Ahytba Rubin at DT. ISU had had a lot of good linebackers better than Jeremiah George. Tim Dobbins is who I would go with for now. Sage Rosenfels should be the backup QB. I would have to look it up because I might be misremembering, but wasn’t Mike Brandter a borderline NFL punter or am I thinking of someone else?

Just coming here to say this. Those are the two best DT's Iowa State has ever had. Both high level NFL players.

Team 2 could basically make a formidable NFL team. OL would be the only missing piece. You already have NFL starters or role players are basically every other position.

You can't just yadda yadda away the offensive line. That o-line would be a good but not great college o-line but would be the worst NFL o-line maybe ever.

QB - I'd put Sage Rosenfels above Brett and I pick them slightly above Team 2.
RB - Team 2, 2 NFL players, but Troy is maybe the best of them both if you watched him in person
WR - Team 2 - Lots of NFL recievers
TE - Team 2 - Kolar is the best of the bunch
OL - Team 1, KO was one of the best
DL - Seems even to be
LB - Team 1
DB - Seems Even
Special Teams, pretty Even.

Nice list, I went to school during Team 1 time and its fun to see the names side by side, I think they are pretty comparable rosters.
Meyer was a much better college QB than Rosenfels. He held most of Iowa State's records until Purdy came along. Rosenfels barely hit 50 percent of his passes and threw more INTs than TD passes both as a junior and senior.

I was going to say James Reed is probably the best DT of that era IMO. Jordan Carstens eventually replaced Harklau after he graduated and was already taking some of his snaps his freshman year too so I would even put Carstens ahead of Harklau. Rubin definately another one that was missed, I think him and Reed would probably be my top 2 at DT.

Agree on Sage too and Dobbins is another solid choice at LB.

The next question is who is coaching each team. Obviously CMC and CJH for head coach and DC on team 2, but who is OC? As for team 1 who fills what role? D Mac is probably the best option for HC. Can CPR or Chiz serve as DC? They are both probably better at DC than HC. Does it have to be someone who served as a corridinator at ISU during that era? Are we then looking at Wally Burnham? What about OC?

Team 1 OC has to be Steve Loney and DC John Skadany IMO. Wally probably my 2nd choice at OC. Rhoads was a DB coach under Mac so if you wanted to get really creative and micro he would qualify for a position coach

Really fun to think through this. I guess I’ll go against the grain here because I think Team 2 clears. Probably because I don’t really remember a lot of the early Mac guys.

The only position Team 1 is significantly better is at OL. Anywhere else Team 1 is better (RB, LB) there isn’t a huge drop off. Whereas Team 2 is significantly better at WR, TE, maybe DL and ST.
