Serious Question: How does ISUs football recruiting look so far?

To me, there’s a lot of similarities between Campbell and Rodger’s recruiting. Campbell was maybe a little more focused on Ohio and Michigan where Rodgers spreads out a little more. But what gives me some optimism is that Rodgers has shown that he’s more than willing to hit the portal. Campbell was hesitant to do that.

I think one thing that is a bit unique with this class is how many players this staff is going to have switch positions compared to what they play in high school.

Moser: dual threat QB moving to WR
Aagesen: DL moving to OT
Wooden: WR moving to DB
Bergfeld: RB moving to LB

To be fair, he was forced to hit the portal the last two years because the entire team left both years. We’ll see how hard he hits the portal when theirs not mass exodus.

I've seen us sign a few future guys recently. What are the trends you're seeing and what about the level of talent so far. To me, it seems like we're defensive focused and O-line focused. It also feels like the dudes we're getting are similar to a Campbell-type level of talent.

Anyone feel like they have a grip on how our coaches are really doing so far? I'll hang up and listen.

I like that he is getting out of state talent with size to add weight and speed once in Ames for a couple of years. Transfers are plug and play but coming out of High School it takes time to get physically competitive with the 20+ year olds.

*Rogers

Not trying to be a jerk, just a pet peeve of mine…. so it’s more of a me problem.

The BIG question is can Rogers retain at guy like David if he does show out his first year. I have no doubt we can find some dudes but we have to be able to keep them here to build on.
Don't forget, the landscape has changed tremendously since David Montgomery. I don't know that Campbell could have retained Montgomery (and others) in todays college football world.

It's going to be a long year with recruiting and on the field. Campbell gutted the program and Rogers is starting all over. We will not really be able to judge his recruiting ability until we see the product on the field and give the kids a chance to meet the staff and see what they are trying to do on the field, which is going to take a year or two at least. The question we should be asking ourselves at the end of the year "is the program moving in the right direction" and are we a tough out for teams with more talent. Football is to important to become Purdue and not win a conference game for a few years.

What the staff is selling now is trust and opportunity, which is going to be difficult to get better players to sign up for.

I suspect we will be in the same boat as before 3 star recruits and transfers have to be developed and coached up.

I have zero expectation of what we will see. It will be interesting.

The 26 class was kind of late minute recruiting so 50s is not a surprise. He is improving and has his 27 class so far in the mod 40s which was considered a higher class for Campbell.
If we're in the mid-40s, I think that's pretty damn good for an unproven coach in a mid-level P4 program. It makes a lot of difference how the pieces fit together.

That should change over time. It's easier to keep players than to get players and the longer players are in the system, the better the chance for success.

Just trying to be honest, Anthons had has ranked 16 of out 16 in the conference, I saw today, for projected finish, said we do not return a player they stated from last season.
What positive have you found in the program since Cambell left? We hired a coach that looks good on paper, no problem with that, but it's going to take him some time to find the players that suit his style of play. We do not have a billionaire or two to throw money for kids in the portal for NIL.

This is not basketball where we lost a lot of talent, but then reloaded with even better talent and the same head coach at the helm of the program.

Let's not kid ourselves, this is going to be a rebuilding year, and next year will most likely be the same.

The magazines mean nothing anymore. They picked Arizona State last when they won the league. I wouldn't hang my hat on that as a source.

Also, we have lost some great starters. There's no question. However, our overall depth at 1-3 deep probably has never been better. JFR sent a lot of guys packing because he liked the film work better of available portal players.

Are the starters good enough for a 500 record? I hope so.

Glad you weren't the coach of Indiana.

Sorry to bum you out, I figured all of us were just fans here, not the coaches that actually make a difference. If Rogers can be half as successful in his first two season at ISU has Cignetti has been at Indiana, everyone will be happy.

That is my point. Because of the portal and availability of relevant film work, it's more about coaching than ever. See pro football.

JFR has won championships, put guys in the NFL, and led wazzou to a decent season bringing in 70 players.

Cignetti brought 13 players from jmu and about 30 from the portal. He beat Georgia and Mizzou for Mendoza. Why didn't he go to Georgia.....too much competition at QB. He was Indiana's dude from day 1. Cuban money didn't hurt, either.

My other point: it's just as easy to be positive, at this point, then creating a narrative that doesn't exist, unless u want it to. Not crazy positive, just realistic opinions on available facts.

Some people choose the glass is half full and some choose the glass is half empty.

Exactly. That's what makes me nervous for Rogers, Campbell was able to build on something. Hell even TJ had issues with this (Hunter). Just got to find a way to slow the leaks
