Based on some discussions with people via PM, I thought I would clear some stuff up:
I'm not trying to be difficult when I say I'm looking for the literal meaning of the symbol, but it's not literal in the way people are thinking.
Too many people are skipping steps and taking a "solution" to some of the first lines and leaping all the way to the end symbol. The beginning of the puzzle has nothing to do with the end result, it's just how the path begins. I cannot stress this enough.
Random example: if answer = John Deere tractor, working backwards with clues, I might go through tractor history or ag history, then crops, then a famine caused by crops, then a person from that location, then that location, then blah blah.
So the puzzle might randomly start with something like, I don't know, a 1973 murder = John Deere tractor.
