According to NFL insider Mike Garafolo, the Denver Broncos have signed veteran wide receiver Hakeem Butler, the reigning UFL Offensive Player of the Year, just ahead of their mandatory minicamp, which starts on Tuesday. Butler joins the team after a dominant season with the St. Louis Battlehawks, where he led the UFL with 641 receiving yards on 29 catches.

He could of been a contender, sometimes the NFL scouts aren't right.

What about the coaches from several teams that did real live action evaluations?

It would be a great story and he's the definition of keeping at it but it's not like he only got one small chance.

Seems like he'd be an awesome red zone receiver in the NFL, but what do I know.

I think the knock on him is that while he makes some spectacular catches because of his height, he also occasionally drops the easy pass, and that is something NFL teams won't tolerate.

Feet at the break to shake a defender too.

Based on sheer athletic talent you'd think he would have landed somewhere.

I'll just throw my two-cents into the pot... I am guessing he has issues with understanding routes, making the right option reads, and like mentioned before, not the best footwork. If he can't beat them to the spot and doesn't always know where the spot is, that makes him a huge liability, even with all the physical gifts.

There is something I think we are all missing. He always seems to perform everywhere except the NFL. He kills it in every league he is in. I am not sure what he is missing. Maybe it's route running. He might just be a huge mismatch everywhere except the NFL where they are used to that freak athlete thing

I think much like the difference between great college/average NBA level, the amount of talent and consistency to make it in the NFL vs college ball is not acknowledged.

I don't hate the Broncos. But as a Chiefs fan, I guess I kinda do.

Anyway, best of luck to you Hakeem!

In the Battlehawks playoff game he had an easy pass go right off his hands that would have been a sure touchdown as no one was even close to him.

I think it will take a coach and OC that really want him to play. Sees the potential mismatch outweighs the potential drop. He is not going to benefit a team as a backup WR. He will need the opportunity to do things he only can do and that means significant snaps. That is why he is great with the Battlehawks. He is a focus. It will be hard to get the same opportunity in the NFL.

He's best at the long ball/stretch kind of route but it's not like he's DJ MetcaIf for speed and would need lots of guys around him that allows him to sneak in to be a threat.

Iirc there were 'Well that's what they did with Randy Moss so why not H.B.!?' takes when in reality Randy Moss was elite amongst the elite and could be about any kind of receiver you needed, his long receptions were just another tool and result of that.

Heck iirc he was inserted at tailback in special circumstances.

Tl;dr it's a terrible comp or expectation.

It's cool that H.B. is getting another shot though.

That seems unusual for someone, especially a WR almost a decade after college ball.

Wonder how much a guy like Butler signed for to basically try out for the Broncos. I think it used to be around 30k to sign a guy like him. Not sure how they do it anymore. I knew a guy that used to try out with no expectation of making a team but they would always pay him. He would make it a good little distance and then get Cut, then sign with a new team for a few weeks and get cut. He knew he was going to get cut but would make like 70 grand in the process
