Texas Tech 10 Million Dollar Portal Season

It’s a real dorky way to describe it, but he has a bit of a point. It’s way too easy to gamble, we’re creating a nation of addicts, and I think we’ll look back on this as we look back on the start of the opioid crisis.

But that doesn’t change the fact that you just can’t have athletes betting on games. That has to be a red line
Smart phones or not gambling isn't hard to do or find ways to do it. Using the phone is just another exuse.

Don’t let this BS sway you. They’re just trying to shift the narrative.

There should be consequences. A total ban from the sport forever might be too harsh I don't know but two game is pathetic. Maybe a ban for a year at least in addition to therapy etc. If other players see that there's not much of a penalty we're going to see more and more of this.

I don't think it's just an excuse. Gambling can be very addictive, the sportsbooks are doing all they can to make a nation of gamblers, and gambling apps means that you can place bets at any waking moment. It's completely different than needing to physically go to Vegas or where ever.

I'm not swayed, I was just referring to that one part. Sorsby can absolutely be an addict, gambling can be a scourge, etc., doesn't change that athletes just can't be allowed to bet on their sports.

Completely agree that there needs to be consequences, and I think it needs to be a lifelong ban. This is an existential threat to sports in a way that few other things are. A year ban just means that they can come back the next year.

Then outlaw bars and beer ads because people are addicted to alcohol. Any addict will get his fix, I know this very well.
Blaming sportsbook is shortsighted.

TT presidents is so tone deaf.

So his school's QB made 9000 bets for a total of $90,000. That's strange how I don't remember him protesting when our school's QB had his college career terminated by the NCAA for making 366 bets for a whopping total of $2799.

I'm fine banning beer ads, and what service are you using that delivers alcohol to your front door instantaneously (which is the fair comparison)? But sure, I'd be fine saying that if you're going to order alcohol you need to pick it up from the store.

I am curious had a full season suspension been handed down, what the reaction would have been. Somehow, I feel like Tech would have flipped out and got suit happy regardless. But would everyone else have accepted a full season banishment? Which to me feels light for the offense, but the case could have been made about youth, severity, etc.

That's fair I suppose.

While there are similarities, there are also significant differences between alcohol addiction and gambling addiction. For some addicts, there is the belief that certain types of gambling addiction are just an extension of a larger technology addiction (i.e. traditional game apps no longer provide an adequate fix). "Sportsbook" does get some blame, because the gaming apps they design play on human psychology to hook the gambler in ways that traditional casino and "bookie" gambling can't.

Sorsby's argument is that because the NCAA acknowledged in 2024, when softening penalties for placing bets by players on other sports they do not play, that online gambling addiction impacts the mental health of athletes, that betting on their own sport while a member of the team is somehow the same thing. This is the basis of the idea that the NCAA isn't following their own bylaws and the reason Sorsby can sue them for breach of contract. However, the NCAA bylaws are clear that betting on your own team or actively attempting ot conceal bets from the NCAA--both of which Sorsby did-- is grounds for dismissal as an NCAA athlete.

Sure, I am assuming we can agree addiction isn't simplistic or black and and white.

I assume this judge will be over ruled by a higher court but that wouldn't be until after the season so it really doesn't even matter.

I would have felt it was too light, but I think a lot of people would have been ok with it. I think people are more upset about the injunction and Tech's actions than they are about the fact that the suspension is only two games

I just love the concept of this little press conference with the TT brass. Like the entire nation of sports fans who despise you were going to suddenly be like "oh, they have a point, I guess this isn't a horrible decision that impacts the sanctity of the game".

It's spend to win, and win above all else. Just embrace it and give up the virtue signaling because it's not going to work.

Just when I think it can't get any worse...... A university PRESIDENT is making excuses because of a technology "apparatus"? Is he opening the doors for students to not get in trouble for using AI apparatus for school work? Really going off a cliff just to protect an athlete that in any other world wouldn't sniff the field.

For reference, Deshawn Hanika and Noah Shannon got 1 year bans for betting on sports that excluded their own team.
