20ish mil expiring contracts.
Who would you offer a qualifying offer to?

Imanaga. Not eligible as he’s on one.
Boyd. No
Taillon. No
Happ. No
Suzuki. Definitely. One more year to figure out which young guys can stick.
I let Happ and maybe even Suzuki walk this offseason and take chances in FA or give some prospects some run.

The problem is Happ and Suzuki are the two best OFs on the market this year and you're at least two years from having a young kid ready.

Happ will give you a hometown discount.

I bring both of them back (assuming Seiya's market doesn't get stupid).

No on Suzuki, yes on Happ at the right price. No on all the other high price guys, yes on Kelly.

I will eat half of Swanson's money if some team will take him at that price in exchange for a bucket of balls. Cubs can afford to throw away $12MM-ish a year on a bad contract, they already did it before with Zambrano, Jackson and Heyward.

I'm (very) willing to trade Alcantara, Ballasteros and any of the 4A pitchers in any deal that makes sense for the long-term improvement of the team, this trade DL or in the offseason.

I'd just soon as soon see Counsell leave, didn't like him with the Brewers, don't like him with the Cubs.

Kelly and Rea are obvious resigns

Contradicting my earlier comment I think you give Suzuki and Happ QO. Even if they both decline that’s two FA starters we can add without losing draft capital.

Now building our rotation next year after the departures. Not going to include Horton or Wiggins until we know they are back.

So…
1. Brown.
2. UFA. (Hoping for a one like Skubal)
3. UFA ( another quality guy here)
4. Steele. Surely back for 27 right? But this is why you resign Rea
5. Cabrera ( live arm needs an offseason fix much like Brown and Palencia went through
6. Rea. Wouldn’t be surprised if he leads us in innings again but you try to build with at least five guys with higher upside
7.Assad. Not gonna be a popular choice but tons of team control and has shown he can win games for us.

After that because it’s likely a couple guys off the scrap heap with big league experience as AAA has no options.

We’re dropping 60 mil from the rotation. Possibly another 40 from the OF. If they don’t buck up for Skubal they aren’t going to be able to give away Marquee subscriptions.

Went to Principal Park yesterday and watched Boyd and Shaw play. Boyd didn’t look overly sharp but it’s just a rehab start so who knows what he was working on.

What I didn’t realize is that Carl Edward’s Jr is still around pitching for Toledo. Was fun to see that guy again after the impact he had on the WS team.

There was chatter a month or so ago that the Cubs might try to get Carl Edwards Jr. after all the injuries in the bullpen.
