I'm pretty sure that Lions deal leaked and then was discredited after the other Campbell ended up there. I remember the report coming out that they had a deal with Matt.
One thing we do know though is that…. Matt had been looking to leave for a while. When he did leave, it shouldn’t have been a shock. He wasn’t who a lot of people portrayed him as.

Portrayed him as what? I feel like most figured at some point he was going to leave. If it wasn't obvious after USC you weren't paying attention.

I think a lot of people (myself included) thought Matt wanted to build a Bill Snyder of Kirk Ferentz esq program that he stayed at for life. He constantly said you are either building something or being someone. Turns out a lot of it was smoke and he was always open to other opportunities and more or less looking to leave every year. Thankful for our best 10 year run, but he really wasn't any different than any other coach out there. He doesn't owe us anything, but I am done trusting anything a coach says ever again.

He kept his door open to actually-better jobs. He was linked to the NFL a few times, so be it. USC, PSU, so be it. It's not like he entertained talking to lateral jobs every offseason trying to bail out over and over. He's got a career to uphold, seemed lately like he's hit a ceiling, it is what it is. Fine for both parties for a fresh start, but Campbell was still great for us for what he's done.

College sports now in general is a year-to-year lease. Anyone can get it and leave at any time. It's just what it is nowadays.

Campbell got the ISU job at a very young age for a head coach, he had plenty of time to build ISU up and then take a higher profile job compared to someone like Snyder or even Freerents when they took jobs at KSU and EIU, later in their lives.

I don't blame Campbell for taking the PSU job, but I do blame him for gutting the ISU program as he went out the door. He talked a lot about family and devotion, then turned around and took the best ISU had with him to Penn State. He could have very easily told the players that they should stay and continue what they had built, and said that he was not going to offer any of them the chance to go with him to Penn State.

10 years is a long time. Bet against anyone being at a school 20+ years

Imo wasn’t always open to other opportunities

He became open to jobs a level above once he built something here- won the Feista Bowl and got ISU in to the top 10 (before that season went off rails)

Didn’t take them, but open to the possibility. Then **** hit the fan with revenue sharing and JP, and was enough to nudge him to leave.

IMO he’s likely still here without revenue sharing and transfer portal. It not only disrupted his model at ISU, it makes going to PSU more akin to moving the home you built to a property you like more

get ready for about another 25 articles just like this one.

you think it's bad now?

Wait until PSU is 10-0 (with their joke of a schedule) and all the media will sing Matt's praises all over again!
The glazing has definitely started for Campbell. B1G teams always get the big stories and glaze now.
