Cable Television pioneer and philanthropist in his later years
Won the America's cup in 1977

For someone that loved to toot his own horn he has been silent for years. I have no idea if he had dementia or if he truly just stepped away from public life as I had read.

He was kind of an odd duck but he did some good things I appreciate.

He brought us cable stations TNT and TCM which was awesome.

Ted and Rupert Murdoch loathed each other.

He went $1B in debt just to restore/own the rights to old classic cartoons like Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry.

He once was the largest landowner in the United States with over 2 million acres. All of them purchased for conservation not for development. He used his massive ranches to single-handedly help restore the American bison population from near-extinction, eventually building the largest private bison herd in the world.

He once went to a dinner and announced he was donating $1B of his personal fortune to create the United Nations Foundation, a public charity supporting the UN's global humanitarian efforts. At the time, it was one of the largest single philanthropic gifts in human history. He did it simply because he felt the UN needed the support and the U.S. government was dragging its feet on paying its dues.

No idea if this is still true but at one time he owned nearly half a million acres in Nebraska.

As a born and raised in Iowa TBS kid, I will always cherish the memories of running inside on a June evening after a little league game to catch the last few innings of the Braves on the superstation. RIP Ted Turner.

Ah yes... the guy who gave us 24-hour "news" networks. That sure has worked out great for our nation.
24 hour news was fine when it was just news and not constant editorializing to cater to particular viewpoints like it is now. CNN international is still pretty close to what old news networks use to be.

"When I was a boy the news was half an hour. A guy would come on, wear a tie, and give you 30 minutes. That was the whole news. Now they have entire channels—24 hours of constant, nonstop news. Turns out, back in the old days… they had it about right."

Used to be a Ted's Montana Grill in the KC Power and Lights.
We would go to it frequently back in the day during the tourney if we wanted somewhere nice to go.

Trying to keep this out of the cave so being as general as I can with this comment... CNN is definitely a shell of what it was intended to be when it was first launched. Turner sold CNN in 1996 so what it is today has morphed a lot from what it was under his ownership. CNN used to be a well-respected news source and the content they air now is more theatre than news at times. If there is actual breaking news that is happening and being reported on at that moment such as a natural disaster or some major news event they do a decent job and are able to keep the editorials out of it for the most part and just stick with reporting as it is happening. But don't even bother watching any of their (and other cable "news" networks as well) regularly scheduled programming unless you enjoy people at a table talking loudly over each other or trying to bait guests into something they can use as clickbait online.

TBS, TNT, TCM, and Cartoon Network have stood the test of time pretty well I'd say. Turner definitely left a lasting mark in the cable TV business.

Ted's legacy is his efforts to secure an restore millions of acres of western lands. I can appreciate that deeply. His media empire not so much, and it's no longer his problem.

CNN was one of my go to news sources back in the day. I try to take in a good variety of sources today and CNN rarely is in view. My main source is funded by donations, operates on a shoe string budget, and is like your Mother's proven good advice telling you to eat your veggies, get sleep, and use the brains God gave you (don't fall for ....).
