TJ signs 10 year extension

When your basketball coach makes double what your football coach does, it tells you exactly what it means for football...
Not exactly a fair comparison. Matt was set to make close to what TJ is making now. You are comparing a veteran coach who makes it to sweet 16 year every other year to a coach who hasn’t even coached one game at Iowa State. If TJ was making double to what Matt was making then you can say that. If Matt left mainly because of salary issues you can say that.

I was talking to some buddies about this. How many other P4 schools in the country have a basketball coach making twice what the football coach makes? Maybe like a Duke or KU? Can't be many. Obviously TJ deserves this but I wonder if we could have done this if Matt Campbell didn't leave.
Another reason that Campbell leaving wasn't all bad.

Is the buyout amount ever included in the extension press release? I thought those typically aren't known until the local media gets their FOIA requests in.
Weird, the Iowa State Daily just reported it’s remaining at 4 million per year after they asked JP.

Ok? I'm not suggesting AD's never disclose it, pretty sure he did the same with Rogers. But sans him choosing to disclose, it doesn't come out until FOIA requests are granted (see Keith Murphy social media post from earlier today).

I don't know that it says anything in particular.

Jamie has typically operated on a 'buy low and pay more when they achieve success' philosophy of hiring and pay. We haven't really gone out and made big splash hires, other than Chizik.

We happen to have just hired the football coach so it'd be expected to be low, and TJ has achieved a ton of success, so he'd be at the point where pollard would pay high.
Yeah if Jimmy proves himself he will get paid. If I remember right TJ came here for really low pay at first

Also, are you saying that guy from the tweet I quoted is ISD? I haven't seen them post/report it elsewhere, only that one guy with 110 followers.

ETA: Not to suggest it isn't true, just wondering why the likes of CW haven't posted it as well.

All fair arguments....but fact remains, I doubt you can find many (if any) P4 schools with a basketball coach making double the football coach. Some schools where the MBB coach makes more? Sure...double? Doubt it. New coach or not.

We are a basketball school! Top 10 venue (arguably top 5), ranked for I lost how many weeks in a row, many of those in the Top 10, have one of the best coaches in the country, attracting elite talent (hosting a top 50 player currently), recruiting rankings in top 25, and a fan base that loves its basketball

Football is here to generate money for the basketball team. :)

Note: this post was intended to be a in a fun natured way. But I think we can all agree we are lucky to have Otz as our coach

Although not this year just a few years ago Duke paid their men’s basketball coach 4 times the football coach and at Kentucky that same year Calipari was making three times the football coach.

  1. HUGE news for MBB
  2. I read this... As long as we keep TJ happy, he's a Cyclone
  3. Really disappointed all we can get is a $4M buyout to take another job. Leverage is still with the coaches in these conversations..
  4. Did a donor or corporation step up to fund this? Or is this the new president committing to a Top 15-20 MBB program going forward

I imagine 3. & 4. above are intertwined as TJ wants to keep his options open if whatever he's been promised were to evaporate.

Either donors stepped up (likely), or the new President is willing to let the Athletic Department run in the red.
