Off-season 2026; Roster Needs/Portal

At Cy's House, I was able to get some information I didn't know.
  • Coby Merrill has been in town for a year, taking online courses to Graduate in Cali.
    • I asked about his brother at OSU. Was told the family dynamic is very complicated.
    • Been pushing Younger in the room. Not quite there yet but getting closer.
  • Ech's possible landing spot is Minny. Iowa wants him at 41, and he wants to be at 49. Money was/is the biggest reason why he left.
  • Christian Castillo, was a little home sick, concussions were an issue and he is close with the Larkin brothers and it was thought they were pushing for him to come back.

Really hope Ech ends up at Minnesota over Iowa

Good stuff. Two things:

-We always hear that Coby and his brother are not close. None of our business, but really curious what the deal is in that complicated family dynamic.
-Coby did win a state title in CA, so I'm assuming he was back there for at least a few months. Awesome to hear he's been in the room a lot already.

Whose our 197 from App State again that RS last year...he was a NQ year prior...are we pretty high on him or think this Cochran moves the needle more and faster?

I agree with Metcalf wanting more HS recruits and "stabilizing" the roster if thats even really possible anymore with NIL, but next year A LOT of our HS guys will be SR's (goes without saying) (Frosts, Gaitan,) so if we can get another guy that can maximize their last year as a team I think we gotta go for another NIL guy at a position of need.

With Herrera out of the fold at HWT who are we going to have behind Merrill?
Floyd is who you’re thinking of, I don’t know much about him other than what you already said. Didn’t hear much buzz about him in the room and never filled in this last year either.

Hagerty and maybe Bruening(?) are the only two big guys I know in the room. I will say if Merrill wants to go right away you have to let him, if not he may leave. Itd be nice to have another guy but who would you bring in that would be comfortable with being a back up for their final year if Merrill does go right away?

The HWT backup question is a good one.

Maybe CJ Carter is going full feed and hitting the weight room like a madman to go back up to HWT? Unless he's done. I dunno.

Maybe there are some solid JUCO guys out there that would like to be in a D1 room/get an ISU degree? Who knows.

Makes sense getting beat up by Bastida for the last year has leveled him up. Now he gets at least another year of the same.

100 % Merrill right away no questions asked, moreso for backup ideas...Hagerty would be an option so that appeases me a little anyways...IMO Id like an 197 rental and another depth piece at HWT. Go get them Metcalf!

McCrae Hagarty is still around and seems like he'd be a serviceable backup at HWT. Didn't compete a ton last year but had a win over Jack Forbes (NQ from Utah Valley).

I don't pretend to know their situation, but a quick search on mapquest shows that JW north high school (Coby) and Gilroy high school (cody) are 5 1/2 hours to 6 hours apart driving distance - 365 miles.

I'm curious how Ech would be impacted since he will be 27 when the season starts next year. Maybe he is grandfathered in?
I believe the way it’s written, they will not be grandfathered in. Would be though for people who were expecting that extra year.
