Actors/Actresses that you can't believe weren't bigger stars

Another from the 80s I thought would be a huge star was Steve Guttenberg. Handsome, funny, charming. In a LOT of popular movies during that time then POOF. Gone.

Diner
Police Academy movies
Cocoon
Short Circuit
Bedroom Window (underrated thriller)
Three Men and a Baby
Cocoon: The Return
Three Men and a Little Lady
Home For the Holidays

It's like they just decided you're gonna be in big hits but only for a decade and then you're gonna be on movies no one's heard of until the end of time.
Love Diner. Such a great cast.

Eric Bana might be a top 5 in this category. Incredibly easy on the eyes. Charasmatic. Can do action movies and drama movies. Had MASSIVE movie roles and then just...nothing. Still working but can't believe he was never an A-lister.

Troy
Munich
Black Hawk Down
Hulk
Star Trek
Lone Survivor

Leelee Sobieski is another. I call her Helen Hunt's doppleganger.

Deep Impact
Eyes Wide Shut
Never Been Kissed
Joan of Arc
Joy Ride
Public Enemies

Then poof. She quit acting in 2012 to focus on family.
Deborah Winger did the same. She had a great run of movies, and that "girl next door" vibe. She definitely had/has the acting chops though.

And after a hiatus, she came back and appeared in recent movies and TV series as well.

This is how I know I'm getting old... but Mia Sara (Ferris Bueller's Day Off; Timecop). She's been in a number of smaller roles over the years, but I'm thinking she's another one who went to focus on family instead.

"Dazed and Confused" cast had quite a bit of collection action within first decade after release, and several steady careers, but not a lot of superstardom. Asterisk for those who got big or significant success (added based on response from @5Cy later in thread)

Matthew McConaughey*
Ben Affleck*
Milla Jovovich*
Renee Zellweger* (uncredited role)
Jason London
Rory Cochrane
Wiley Wiggins
Parker Posey
Adam Goldberg
Joey Lauren Adams

London has had consistent roles, but his twin, Jeremy, became more prominent, mostly in TV (Party of Five, 7th Heaven, I’ll Fly Away).

@coolerifyoudid might be able to expound on some specifics.

Bana was great in Munich. Really good in the Netflix show where he’s a park ranger.

My favorite actually.

Wonder how much that Hulk movie hurt his career. I think it was the one that most people hated, right?
I think the flop of Hulk was a big reason. And Troy, while it made some decent money, was still not greatly reviewed. I seem to recall that he also had no desire to live in the U.S. and instead live in Australia which would make it difficult.

Troy should’ve been way better. Seemed pretty corny.

If you haven’t watched Untamed on Netflix I recommend it.

Untamed was WAY better than I expected. And TMI, but he is still probably one the most attractive men in the world even at his age. :) I know you didn't need that info, but whatever.

She married Kevin Kline and disappeared. She was cast as Steve Martin's daughter in Father of the Bride and had to drop out because she got pregnant. She runs a cool little shop in NYC now.
Side note: Their daughter Greta is in music leading the band Frankie Cosmos (initially that was her stage name).
