WBB: 2026 Transfer Portal

It makes financial sense to do it now.

If we make a move now:
- pay his buyout at 300K, (we do not pay the retention bonus because he didn't make it to the required date)
- pay a new coach at 300-400K
- pay a new staff at 200K for all
That total is 900K

if we wait 1 year:
- Retention bonus at 800K
- New HC at 300-400K
- pay a new staff at 200K for all
That's 1.4 million

That's a 500K savings
You arent getting anywhere close to a better HC and new staff at 600k total then what we have right now. 300k is below most mid majors

We pay the retention bonus ($700k, not $800k) unless he's fired for cause or leaves on his own. And no way we get a coach and staff that cheap.

I know this will never happen but if Jamie was really sly about this and had some boosters that were wanting to push Bill out right now here's what I would tell them "I'll listen if you can commit enough money to pay our next head coach $1 million a year. In order to make a big move I need the money to do it to go after a proven coach."

My fear is we are going to get embarrassed trying to build a roster with a bunch of players that have never played at this level before and look totally overmatched next season. I sure hope I'm wrong and the wheels are already in motion to bring in some talent when the portal opens but even as optimistic as I usually am I am feeling apathy right now with how quickly this thing unraveled. I may of had a bit of hope had Audi stayed and been able to use her status to bring in some players that would compete but I look at the roster with AJ, Paulk, Jensen, and Comito left and while AJ is a good player and popular with our fans she is not an All-Big 12 caliber star that another All-Big 12 team caliber player is going to look at our program and think there is potential to compete in the upper half of the conference next season. We had that in Audi and Addy which surely played a factor in why Jada chose to sign with us and now all 3 o them are gone.

I don't know how any of this can be spun in a positive way even with Cardinal and Gold colored glasses on. If any of these players wind up at another Big 12 school or Iowa it's just going to be even more salt on the wounds too. I've witnessed these players off the court, they tailgated with AJ's parents 2 years ago right next to us and they seemed like such a tight knit and fun group. Whatever happened since then and now had to have been pretty bad for only AJ of that bunch to be left now and that is mind boggling to me how the program is at this point. Even if by chance there were some players that were creating the toxic environment that is on Bill and his staff to address and take care of and not let it get to this point. Audi, Addy, and Jada may get some better NIL deals somewhere but there is no way the rest of the players leaving are leaving because someone is offering significantly more money and playing time at a power conference school.

I agree with all you said. I said all year something was wrong. Last year's team were so close and this year there was just a cloud over the team the whole year.

Every one is asking CBF to leave so we can better the program sooner but then talk about getting a coach on the cheap. To better the program with the support we have and facilities it does not happen by going out and hiring a coach on the cheap. Can't have you cake and fire Bill while at the same time going for a cheap new hire.

Get rid of Bill after next year and pay 700k for a new great coach to resurrect the program.

You can't go cheap on the next hire to replace Bill who is one of the longest tenured WBB coach in D1. It has to be someone that will get the fanbase excited just like the TJ, Campbell and Rogers hires did for MBB and FB. At the very least you are going to pay them close to what he made if not more depending on who wants the job.

That's 1 credit I will say that we probably benefited from Bill not leaving as he probably had opportunities that may have paid him more in the long run or we should have paid him more for what he has done here.

We really never carry more than 12 or 13 players so I would imagine they look for at least 8 players to fill out the roster. Excited to see what they can find to fill the spots.
Realistically they never play more than 8. If you end up with 10 players that's all they need give them all a little bigger slice of the payment pie.

I'll respectfully disagree on the salary issue. There would be a pretty good selection of up and coming coaches with a lot of skill that would enjoy the challenge of ISU for around $500,000 give them a million for staff and I'm guessing you'd end up with a pretty darn good staff. Once they have success bump their salaries up.

Going into a season with 10 is not a feasible plan. Especially for a program that has dealt with as many injuries as we have.

are there any mid major coaches close that would work? Like a Drake or South Dakota State who would have recruiting connections and want to move up. At the same time could pull the top end players with them to build around?

Ok, I’ve been traveling for work this week as much was happening back in Ames so I’m playing catch up. I’m reading on-line articles linking Jada Williams with a veritable who’s who of WCB. College Sports Network has Jada’s top five landing spots listed as: LSU, UCONN, UNC, Oregon and TCU. A post on X suggests TCU, Texas or KU.

I’ll keep my day job - I like Jada’s game but don’t see her as a viable replacement for Rory Harmon or Olivia Miles! It’ll be interesting to see where she lands!

Pretty sure she is visiting or will visit UCLA so dont think that top 5 is right

We will just agree to disagree. Heck in the blowout buy games. The bottom of the bench barely gets to play. 10 would be fine. They practice against their men's practice squad at the practices anyway (I'm pretty sure)

Jamie's MO is to hire relatively inexpensive (to start) mid-major coaches: Campbell, Prohm, T.J., Rogers. In today's college sports environment, I can't imagine that changing.
