Big 12 Women's Flag Football - Coming 2028?

If the NFL covered the cost for 6 programs it would be well worth it. Only potential downside for ISU is that maybe this is the new women's sport and not wrestling.

We are probably not one of those schools that would add this. ISU doesn't even have a flag football club team to try and build up.

ISU's replacement for women's gymnastics??

Not starting until 2028 gives us some time to plan and create the new program. We already have indoor/outdoor practice facilities. They can use the soccer stadium for games or the old grass fields east of Lied.

That’s what defines this board. Posters always wanting to piss on potential good news.
Is this good news? I personally would prefer to add flag football as I don't care one way or the other about wrestling, but you have to admit women's wrestling has a lot of momentum in the state right now.

Looking at Nebraska's flag football announcement, it looks like this will be a spring sport. I hope it's a late spring sport so we could have pleasant weather to watch.

NU already has a top recruit signed.

With the expected launch 2 years away, I wouldn't think not having a club team is a concern. I don't know, does Iowa State have a club women's wrestling team? And if so, for how long.

It would be interesting to see if the NFL subsidizes women's flag football (or even mens) for a period of time to grow interest. I don't believe it's a coincidence this announcement is on the heels of the NFL flag football competition a couple weeks ago.

And with flag football being an Olympic Sport, the 2028 start would be a natural. And maybe some of the Olympic Athletes would then be on Big12 teams.

The cost of adding a sport is a concern, especially when one considers women's wrestling as another option. But maybe one of the realities of the Revenue Share Era is there are no sacred cows among Olympic Sports- mens or womens. What has a better chance of earning ticket, donor or sponsorship revenue? Womens flag football or womens wrestling vs. womens swimming, womens tennis, women's cross country? Do some of the current womens (and mens) Olympic sports take on club team status?

My take is this, "What are the other Big 12 schools going to do?" I don't have anything against wrestling, but I hate the fact that ISU, OSU, ASU and WVU are the only real Big 12 members who participate. It just feels like it's missing something to me. At the end of the day, I really could not care less if they added women's wrestling or flag football, but if we are the only Big 12 School with women's wrestling but 6-12 other members go flag football and we are not part of that, it seems like a miss to me, especially if flag football is an officially sanctioned women's sport by the B12, but women's wrestling is not.

Agreed I'd be interested in what other schools will do regarding flag football.

The thing about Women's wrestling is that we'd probably have donors to front some of the cost of starting the program. I don't think we get that with a flag football program.

On the flip side, I'd be curious what the operating costs of flag football would be.

If the NFL is partnering with the B12, it's very possible they would subsidize some of the cost for the programs.

Lets see. Will need flags, a few junior high footballs, some field paint and ISU bikinis. Should't cost too much.

True, and I was thinking of this as well. If they are willing to upfront the start up costs, then great. The next thing then becomes media/sponsor revenue to cover operating costs.
