Let's see how well you know Iowa State's Men's Basketball Coaches over the years. The Quiz

I got 5/6. Missed the most NCAA appearance question. Thought it was Hoiberg. I sincerely wish ISU or someone from CF would find a way to educate people on Maury John. Sad story and possibly the biggest "what could have been in ISU history". I think if Maury John would have lived we'd be talking about ISU like we do Arizona or Michigan State basketball today. Not a blue blood but a next level program. What he did at Drake was incredible, and you could tell he had ISU going the right way. Seems like a sad and forgotten past of ISU history.

exactly the same for me

5/6. I didn't give Orr enough credit :(

Side note: I did a quick Wiki dive into Fred's coaching career. His Nebraska win total could surpass his win total at ISU this year (currently Nebrraska - 103, ISU - 115). I lost track that this is his 7th season at Nebby already.

6/6. Wasn't sure on who didn't have a winning season between GM and WM.
Wayne never had a losing season, but things were trending the wrong way at the end of his tenure.

GM had 3 winning seasons at UNI before us, 4 losing seasons in Ames, and then only one losing season in the past 15 years at Creighton. Maddening, honestly.

I got 5 for 6, also got tournament appearances incorrect, (spoiler for those who haven't taken quiz) probably got in a rush and having some of appearances spread over longer period (with several gaps) might have misled me.

It is sad.

I'm curious of process to choose the next HC (an assistant finished the '74 season after John's diagnosis, name escapes me) ... Trickey was next, does anyone know who else was considered?

I think Trickey was somewhat successful prior to that at previous stops, didn't quite work at ISU.

It is amazing how long he has been here. Wonder what would of happened if he stayed at ISU??

I was aware of Maury John, moreover his success at Drake. I was 10 when they took UCLA Lew Alcinder to the wire in the NCAA semifinal.

From a Wikipedia article about him:

"It was noted that John, during that turbulent era was one of the first to hire a black assistant coach and have a black and white player room together in the same hotel room on road trips, even in the deep South."

Died far too young at 55. RIP

I certainly looked like he had ISU trending the right way. Given how modern Hilton was at the time you'd have to think he would have just continued to recruit even better talent.

It does seem odd he didn't have at least one season at ISU at NIT level or maybe with even one season on NCAAT bubble.

Never got a foothold with the roster or had ability to get many wins vs. opponents "we shouldn't beat" (until, oddly, winning at top-5 KSU his final season. Of all the games for it to happen ...).
