I agree with the general thrust of this. That said, because of the nature of PER (entirely based on box scores), an athlete who is a negative on team defense generally will be overrated by the stat.- Dale

Some people here are underestimating our offensive prowess last year. Per Warren Nolan, we were 7th in effective FG percentage and 9th in points per 100 possessions -- and that's with Brown out for a few games. Jamie's MO is to hire relatively inexpensive (to start) mid-major coaches: Campbell, Prohm, T.J., Rogers. In today's college sports environment, I can't imagine that changing.- Dale

Two things can both be true: Iowa State women's basketball was a laughingstock until Bill came in the '90s, and he deserves a statue on campus for how he raised it out of nothing into something respectable. He is probably not the right person to be leading the program today.- Dale

As a (suburban) Chicagoan, no way. UIUC is somewhat less sport-focused than Iowa State, but that's more than countered by the huge number of UIUC grads in the Chicago area.- Dale
