Remembering two important World War 2 events

Kinch, have you viewed this YouTube video about the impact of Tarawa on Nimitz and how it altered his tactics afterward? I saw it only a couple or three days ago. If accurate, Nimitz stands at the peak of American military leadership (imho). Nimitz, a great man equal to any in our history.

World War II with Tom Hanks

An opening for me to mention my all-time favorite Admiral, Willis Lee, WWII's top naval gunslinger. His story, imho, is startling and amazing. I understand Lee, and a young naval officer under him, James Van Allen (yep, that JVA) developed the anti-aircraft proximity fuse, a key war development...

Please don't forget 'The Pacific', like BoB also produced by Spielberg and Hanks. It is outstanding.

Remembering two important World War 2 events

It's been decades since I read a book about Puller. Wasn't there some Marine Corps institutional opposition to Chesty winning MoH? Yeah, I recall reading that two of those Navy Crosses, and maybe a third, qualified for MoHs.

Remembering two important World War 2 events

By 1945 Nimitz's Pacific fleet numbered more than 1600 ships. From 3 carriers on December 7 to two dozen modern, large, fast Essex carriers, and many jeep carriers to boot. A massive fleet, the largest by far in world history. And the European theater took precedence over the Pacific theater...

Remembering two important World War 2 events

Only recently I read that following the Doolittle Raid in April 1942 that bombed Tokyo, the Japanese killed some 200,000 Chinese in retribution for those who had helped hide and protect American flyers. The Doolittle mission included flying into China after releasing the bombs. Jimmy...

Remembering two important World War 2 events

Guess we've strayed a bit from D-Day, sorry. In a way, though, these battles, and the many lesser-known ones, are all scenes of the one story. 16 million Americans in uniform during WWII.

Remembering two important World War 2 events

Kinch, hey. No doubt like you, I've been reading WWII histories for decades, particularly about the PTO. These two men were outstanding American warriors, today we celebrate them and all those who fought with them. Here's another Iowan I'll bet you agree, Kinch, that few people likely are aware...

Tarawa - November 1943 D-Day - June 1944 Iwo Jima - February 1945 Okinawa - April 1945 IMHO, it's likely that many Americans today are not aware of the savagery and awful pain:

Another Midway important figure, Admiral Spruance. In later years there was a push to posthumously award Spruance a fifth star.
