NIL and the Portal

Now that the season is over…I’ve started thinking about NIL and how uncontrolled, it has corrupted college athletics. What will happen in the off season? We know SEC or BIG teams will be sending offer sheets to Brown and Crooks. Tampering is no longer a thing. Loyalty is a fading trait for many. Thoughts?

My view is that if they want to chase a payday elsewhere then good riddance.

Hope to keep the core group. But based on results this year, CBF & staff has a lot of portal work themselves to upgrade the overall roster. Especially critical to get more physical and athletic kids in the program.

But also feel like this season should be an eye opener for CBF. The women's game is changing. Equivalent of when Iowa HS girls shifted from 6 to 5 player. Coach needs to change his approach, his X's & O's and type of women he recruits.

No, keeping Adi and Audi is the only priority. Nothing else matters until that is accomplished.

Honestly. We have the fan base right? We have DECENT NIL money to throw around…. Would anyone be upset if Bill resigned and we hired a new coach? I say this because… what’s going to change next year if we keep crooks and brown? It’s not looking like much.

I don’t think Audi makes as much NIL money elsewhere. She has a good deal with fareway and a couple other places.

While I don’t doubt some schools have significant NIL money dedicated to WBB, I still am very doubtful about the amount that often gets stated.

Women athletes’ NIL is often driven by their social media following and marketability as a model. Livvy Dunn is the top NIL earner, not because anybody cares about LSU gymnastics, but because of her following and she is pretty. I think WBB is far closer to the spirit of the original NIL idea.

I would be pretty surprised if any of the transfers we’ve had were driven primarily by NIL offers.

As for Crooks and Brown, the teams that have the NIL money (SCAR, UCONN, LSU, and a few other) probably feel that they have better players than them.

I worry about Brown most. It is critical that see stays. She was really good down the stretch. This off season is going to very interesting. This team didn’t have the success they were expecting. The team chemistry seemed good to me, but I’m sure many players are questioning what their role may be. Who played and how much varied throughout the season.

We’ve already seen some schools in our conference build through paying athletes. TCU bought a conference title. OSU spent some of Pickens money to make a run by buying players. Seems money is the name of the game for many young athletes.

I'd advise my kid to make as much money as he could. Loyalty in that world does nothing but make you poor. Would you do your job for 1/10th of the money you could make somewhere else?

Other than the obvious two…I really hope Kelsey stays. But, wouldn’t blame her if she left…she was figuring it out and contributing the last month, then gets chained to the bench for no real reason today. Yes, Tanke hit 2 shots in the first half, after that the quick shot wasn’t advised and they keep her out there (and for the record, I don’t dislike Tanke), I just see the quick hook for Kelsey that I don’t quite understand. But…I just am a fan watching.

Yes. I had a career as a teacher. I remember for years my brothers coming home and talking about their big end of year bonuses. I always smiled and said I got two weeks off. One was a VP of one of the largest advertising firms in the country and the other a bigwig in corporate America. After all that…one left to become a minister and the other is now a professor. And I’d say that as a teacher of teachers, I influenced more lives and will continue to change the world in more ways than any corporate earner. I had job satisfaction in spades. That’s worth more than any amount of money.

Mark Campbell claims he got all his senior class players to come with no NIL.

As for OSU, are they really spending that money on WBB when they really only care about football and sucked last year.

I agree though that money is the name, I would find it very hard not to advise my daughter not to take a 100k salary bump

Well…it’s not typically NIL, but collective/university dollars that are used to buy the services of players. I’m sure thats what you probably meant. She did add another NIL deal at TCU with La Croix. Her current NIL value is just short of 800k.

If I were a Star WBB player I would be suing the NCAA over the 4/5 year limit eligibility limit. Seems way more lucrative to play college ball than go to the WNBA

Couldn't agree more. Britt Prince would've been a great fit next to Brown and Crooks.
