Agree. Spending 2 days of 3 hassling with air travel is not relaxing in my book.
If you’re doing it right it shouldn’t be a hassle. Also not only opens up a ton of options but considering location aren’t you also going to be spending a ton of time in a car driving to get to anywhere worth going?

There isn't any "doing it right" since COVID, IMHO. If you are driving, the fun begins whenever you want to stop, and the sightseeing can be anytime you're on the move. Yeah, it can be drudgery. Flying puts you at the mercy of whatever **** is going down that day, and whichever ******** you happen to be forced to fly with.

We’re fairly active. Hiking, sports, like to go out to eat. Would rather not sit in a hotel room around the clock but would be ok on a beach. Not huge drinkers but will have a drink or two if we go out. We live in Ankeny, think we’re looking at flying.

Late Sept to mid October is absolute best time for any hiking in sierras or Rockies. Could be national park but lots of places just as amazing.

- After tourist season
- After mosquito insanity
- before heavy snow

Never been but I really dont have a desire to go either.
Our first time out to Vegas was the ISU football game a couple of years ago, we had a good time, but it's no longer the cheap destination that it was 20 years ago. We don't gamble, food was expensive as hell. Only way I would go back to see another ISU game or a Chiefs game. The stadium was nice and an easy walk from the hotel.

Great 3-day vacation spot is San Antonio, stay on the river walk, see the alamo, lots of neat bars and places to eat. Just a fun couple of days.

In July when we flow out of Des Moines to SF on a Friday at 5:00 AM the line to get through security started at the Southwest check in stand all the way to the South. They were not allowing anyone to do tsa pre-check until they got up the escalator that morning. We stood in line an hour, without pre-check to get through security. They had installed new scanning machines the day before and only had one going when we got in line, they finally did open a second machine and was using the pre-check scanner to get people through. Just a total mess.

Yikes. I have had times at LAX and Denver where precheck must have saved a full hour minimum.

Once on a business trip we sat down and had a meal and drinks, paid, walked back to security and the coworker without precheck was still in line.

Dude stop flying spirit lol.

Sorry you have had these experiences though. Between precheck, lounges, etc flying really shouldn’t be that bad. Also just grab some good noise canceling headphones, doesn’t matter what’s going on in the plane then.

A tip I give is don’t even try to connect to wifi even if it’s free. Seen so many spend half the flight frustrated with it, so rare to get a fast and easy internet connection on any airline. Better to just bring something to do that doesn’t require wifi.

It's Bunch, not Paris. Unless you're a resident. :D
I mean, would you rather be in Bunch or Paris?

I swear the last time I went to Lake Wapello there was a sign that said Paris but I might have been distracted by the cattle crossing the highway.:D

We have more issues with United than Spirit. But first time I got an email about Free Spirit, I thought someone was trying to sell me some fancy bra.

I am a fan of the short road trip instead of sitting in airports for hours, wondering if Shadow from Homeward Bound can come save me and lead me home.

I’d love to see Curt document a 72 hour trip to the east coast and back from Newton effing Iowa that includes an extra 4 hour layover at O’hare due to weather that actually looks like fun or makes the expense worthwhile. Spirit out of Iowa? C’mon, man.

I love how *they* created a system that is so slow and so crappy that they'll let you pay to get out of it.

I'm not saying I am against doing it, but it is a funny system if you think about it.

You must have left SE Iowa at 3:00 am or something.

With the improvements at Kansas City airport, and greater flight choices, we are more likely to start using it again, as it isn’t that much farther than DM. Have some kids there. But hours driving, then hours sitting, then taking your chances on who is going to be invading your space in the next seat, then repeating on the return, flying is just something I loathe.
