***Official 2023 Chicago Cubs Thread***

My money is on Wesneski getting the start in Toronto. His only flaw his first time around was getting **** stomped by lefties. He tore it up in AAA and the Blue Jays are a right-hand dominant team. Varsho and Belt are their only two main starters that hit left handed and I don't know how big of threats they are.

I'd rather not start the service time clocks on guys like PCA, Brown, Wicks, and Canario until next year. Let Wesneski, Assad, or Killian fill in where needed.
We've seen more and more players starting the year on the MLB roster with the new service time rules. This won't affect all of these guys but maybe the Cubs have extra incentive to bring up PCA or Brown this year with that in mind.

It's entirely possible they call guys up but I don't think the new service rules are going to mean much for the Cubs.

First full year of service time is your 172nd day on an active roster with 187 days in an MLB year OR finishing 1st or 2nd in Rookie of the Year Voting regardless when you're called up.

It's much too late for Brown or PCA to finish top 2 in Rookie of the Year. Additionally, finishing top 3 in ROY earns your team an extra draft pick if that player earned a full year of service time.

130 at bats, 50 innings pitched, or 45 days on the active roster is what equates to a rookie.

There is no reason Matt Mervis wasn't called up last year for experience other than service manipulation. The question we have to ask is whether Brown and PCA are difference makers for the playoff push, which I would say probably not.

He's sat a while and hopefully figuring things out. You need everyone to contribute long term. Tauchman probably pinch hits when they go to the pen which should be early.

I actually dont hate it. You still have a few months left and you have to platoon guys a bit. Give Seiya some ABs and see what happens. You can always pinch hit for him in the later innings.

Agree. I'm just not sure you sit Tauchman as good/clutch as he's been. I was hoping for Candelario at 3B, Bellinger at 1B, Tauchman in CF when the announcers said last night Ross told them Suzuki was playing tonight. Regardless, rooting for another W tonight if Hendricks can keep the ball down. The is the 16th game day in a row so everyone needs a day. Luckily, we play tonight then a day off, then a 3 game series and a day off, and then a 2 game series and a day off.

Taillon can take Smyly's spot Sunday on normal rest. Then they can start Stroman, Brown or Wesneski early next week. So it's the perfect time to make the move. They opened a 40 man spot so Brown is definitely a possibility to at least come up for some long relief while Smyly try to figure things out.
Just saw Taillon was the probable starter Sunday.

When Suzuki was first benched, Rossy said Seiya had a million thoughts going through his head and felt limiting him to lefties only would start the process of clearing Suzukis mind.

If we get Ohtani, Seiya will play a big role in it. We have to keep him happy while not having him cost us games

I’ll accept it but I don’t love Assad starting Friday over Wesneski or Killian. Those two are hopefully future starters, might as well start seeing what they have, and Assad likely won’t give you more than 4 innings, so you really want to start the series with a bullpen game?

Suzuki showing why you don't quit on guys. Looking like he's going to take some ABs away from Madrigal (and others) down the stretch.

No, I wasn't referring to you.

Heck of a win last night. Props to Tailion for figuring it out in a big way after the early homer. And the offense did just enough to get a win.

I honest to God think Hendricks may consider walking Alonso every time at the plate tonight. If he puts one of his 87 MPH fastballs over the middle Alonso may hit it to Canada.
Should have listened to me.

Assad seems destined to be a long relief guy. Not sure he has the stamina to go 6+ innings over the long haul. Wesneski has had his control issues but man when his slider is on and he his hitting his spots he sure looks like a guy that can be a middle of the rotation guy once he gets is figuring out.
