Is Fan Engagement a Problem?

Crowd was OK last night, got loud at times. Problem with playing WVU is the game is just so ugly and stops all the time because there are so many fouls. Last night went over 2.5 hours just like the first game did. Not as many fouls (47 last night 51 @ WVU) but still a lot of fouls and a lot of stoppage of play to look at the monitor to review things. It's harder to keep the crowd engaged when there are constant stops in the games that takes away momentum. And when we go on these long funks at times trying to score that kills the crowd some too.

which fans were more dejected?
  • the fans that actually stayed in their seats the entire game
  • the fans that watched the last 4 minutes from the concourse(this needs to be addressed)
  • the fans that completely left the arena before the game ended
Probably 1 and 2 some of the people leaving were while we were ahead. My group stayed but a 2.5 hr BB game is long.

I wasn't at the game last night so maybe the in person atmosphere was fine and I'm just complaining for no reason. But I can't help but notice when the camera pans and the entire lower bowl is sitting there dead silent during a 2 point lead with under 4 minutes to play in a redemption game. This feels like the time in the game to me where a loud rowdy crowd could really help to sway the game, but instead it seems like everyone in the camera shot just apathetically watched the team coast to another loss.

I get not standing and cheering the entire game, especially when games are lasting over 2.5 hours, but those last crucial minutes with a close lead don't make sense to me. We pride ourselves on the great gameday atmospheres we create but it seems that atmosphere only comes in spurts, and dies the second something goes wrong. I don't quite get why it is. Maybe it just takes so long to get the priority points to get those lower bowl seats that by the time you get there you're too old to want to stand and cheer, maybe the flow of events in the stadium (timeouts, fouls, timing/song selection of the band and speakers) brings down the energy, or maybe everyone's is just tired at the end of a long season. Whatever the reason is, it's disappointing to see on TV when other fanbases would be seen going rabid in that same scenario.
Crowd was great last night, all things considered (I'd say a top 5ish of the season). The moment you're referencing, we didn't score from the 3:50 mark until the 0:10 mark. WV shot 8 free throws (made 7) in that span which killed all game flow and crowd momentum.

ISU athletics marketing needs a refresh
I've been to 7 games this year and i could set my watch to whatever song they played being at a specific minute mark of the game.

But i have to remember this is same ath dept that plays 1995 Jock jams and attempts stripe outs without providing shirts to fans so they're pretty out of touch.

Cannot emphasize this enough. Gameday production is stuck in the early 2010's. Pre-game and in-game atmosphere is very blah. I do like the new video played at the end of halftime this year, wish they'd incorporate new/loud/updated items throughout pre-game and in-game production.

Lady behind us last night was so rowdy, I still hear her voice in my head. She was vocal 100% of the time, still being we were about 10 rows up in the balcony.

You were in section 213, too?!

We had a loud one behind us - I'm not sure if their FT shooters could hear her, but she sure gave it her all. Kudos, loud lady!

No the crowd shot I specifically remember being striking to me was when we were up two and WVU scored to either tie or go up by 1 (don't remember exactly) and it seemed like the whole crowd went "welp that's the game". But yeah those long reviews are definitely kills for sure. They seem even longer when you're at the game too.

A lot of people were leaving from the balcony when WVU tied the game back up(with a couple of minutes left). I was tempted to, but was hoping they could pull it off. The offense gives the crowd nothing to get excited for to be honest. Especially when the step back desperation 3's are going in.

Was she sitting in the last row up against the wall?

I'm probably a biased moron, but if there was a way to keep track of percentage of shots made by an opponent step back three with a hand in his face as the shot clock is about to expire, I'd bet a lot of money that Iowa State is last in the country.

I think there are MANY factors...but I won't blame the folks that did show up. I think a lot of time the flow of game and "moments" can really get the crowd going....or can take the air out quick....sure, a new song here and there may do something....but things like Juicy Wiggle SEEM to be to cap something good and keep the energy going....but then we have to pay the bills, so sometimes those things are delayed because the canned announcement has to be made.

I know there is always the debate of "are the students the catalyst?" and that was used regarding the moving of the section for football games....but then if you look at the football schedule this past year, after non-con there were only 9 touchdowns...meaning, hard to get a crowd going...if there is nothing going on.

It was actually a pretty rowdy crowd in person especially when there was just some offense to go with the defense.

Also was that crowd shot during one of the endless prolonged reviews? Holy cow those are crowd killers.
They should have played Juicy Wiggle imo during the prolonged review. That would have kept the crowd going during the review. The super long delay, missed FTs, WVU made FTs, made 3, empty possession, then a WVU 2 really killed the anger vibe the crowd had.

Just an outsider's comment for you boys to trash. I thought the crowd was great when ISU was rolling. I did see a lot of empty seats when they showed the students flag-running the balcony. But overall, given the type of rock-fight game that was, it wasn't the fans that were responsible for the loss.

I've watched a lot of ISU hoops this year, all the B12 teams for that matter. But I can't quite put my finger on what's happened with the Clones the last half of this season. They seem to have all the parts. Kalscheur is an absolute stud. Osun has an inside game on both ends. King looks to be the real deal. But something has gone askew, which I can't define. It's not the fans.

We have proof (first 2/3 of the season) that fan engagement is at all-time highs...when the team gives people a reason to cheer. Baylor, Texas, K-State, Texas Tech all had great crowds that were rowdy. When there is zero offense, how is the crowd supposed to get into it? Hilton Magic was built on stops and scoring and this team hasn't given us a good combination of that over the last several games.

I noticed this a lot during football games last year. It seemed like with the ever increasing length of tv timeouts there could have been great opportunities for on field activities or entertainment to keep the crowd interested but it seemed like every game filled the timeouts with the same 1 minute long fan/military/alumni recognitions followed by about 2 minutes of boredom. Give me a damn mascot hotdog race or make me find which cyclone helmet the football is under or something. It doesn't take much.

I do think we need to be on the officials more than what we do as we have a coach who doesn't generally complain that often, but you see what happens when the officials let themselves be intimidated by Huggins. The crowd in Hilton should be in that role.
Huggins/Huggie Bear was on the officials all night long ...Huggie started early and never let up until the game was decided and huggie was going to win!!

I made it to two games this year (vs. St. John's and Kansas).
The fans were definitely engaged both games.
I enjoyed my Clone Cones and the Ws!

Why would anyone get excited about watching this product on the court right now?
