2022 Concerts

Did you go? Great show, but a weird venue.
I did! I agree the venue was weird. It was the first time I've been there though and I wasn't totally sure what to expect. But I left thinking it was weird in a good way, and I'd definitely go back. I really like the laid back informal aspect to everything from parking to concessions, to the barn itself.

As for the show, The Zombies were fantastic! Colin's vocals are still wonderful and Rod's keyboards were on point. The other guys in the band did a good job highlighting the two frontmen. I enjoyed the set list with a nice mix of classic hits and stuff from an upcoming album (which I will be buying).

The opening band, in my opinion, was not good. Not entertaining. Not a complete package. Took themselves way to seriously and had a higher opinion of themselves than deserved. The opening band had a two guys, played less than ten songs, and needed 5 different guitars to do it. The Zombies had five guys, played a lot more songs, and only needed 3 guitars (including the bass).

I will note that I was super pleasantly surprised that bottles of water only cost $1 at the concession stand.

I have to share. My son-in-law got called into work for emergency so daughter called my wife to go to Lollapalooza to see Green Day last night with her. I ended up going in his place. Long night but worth it. Great show! Great time with my daughter! Cant get some songs out of my head. I didn't feel so old in the crowd either. Haha.

Hit the sugar ray free concert in MC. Why do blazers think I want smoke blown right in my face? Do edibles if in a crowd.

Anyone going to Billy Strings @Hinterland tonight? I’ll be rolling in on a bus with some friends. Probably head down to Des Moines around 2, maybe stop and grab some food on the way.

I'm heading down for Billy tonight! Looking forward to it. Then I'm also heading tomorrow afternoon for the rest of the Hinterland weekend.

Anyone with experience camping down there have recommendations on where the best places to look for a tent camping spot are? I have VIP but not sure if the VIP camping or Innerland camping areas look like they will be better to base out of.

Saw Pat Benatar last week (wife is a huge fan), and Jon Waite opened up. Good show. I wanted to see Anthrax/Black Label Society on either Tuesday in KC or tomorrow in St. Paul, but I am playing drums at a family run benefit show in Bondurant and had to miss. Will also miss some shows in Des Moines due to FB games. Oh well. Might need a road trip.

Would love to see that Anthrax/Black Label Society show.

Got to Bonnie Raitt (with Mavis Staples opening) at the outdoor McGrath Amphitheater in Cedar Rapids Wednesday night. Excellent show! Bonnie still has it, played a lot of the hits, some new stuff, some bluesy stuff, and absolutely outstanding covers of INXS’ Need You Tonight and Talking Heads’ Burning Down The House. Just an incredible fun show.

The downside was a thunderstorm that rolled through and chased Mavis off the stage in the middle of the set, and had the venue evacuated for an hour and a half before Bonnie started. The wait was worth it, though.

Any Billy Strings reviews? I love that band and was wondering how the crowd responded. It can be a little overwhelming for some. Great get for Hinterland.

Knocking one off the bucket list. Never seen Colin Hay/Men at Work and am flying to Nashville to see Men at Work at the Ryman. Should be awesome.

Has anyone seen a concert recently at Val Air. I'm going to see Jack White next week and was wondering if there are any places to sit?

We'll also be there, and although it's been a LONG time since the last time I've been there - there were a few tables away from the main area in front of the stage in a little cubby.

Remember to leave your phone either at home or check it in!

I've been to a couple shows (Beach House & Jimmy Eat World) at Val Air recently. There are some tables & chairs on one side with varying views of the stage but it's mostly a standing venue. I'll be at Jack White too.
