Muscle cars

If you go the Mustang route, don't sleep on the EcoBoosts. 2.3L T 4cyl puts down about the same power as the pre-Coyote (~2011) V8s do, with much better gas mileage for all other driving. If you do want to max out power at somewhat-reasonable price, those older Coyote V8s become appealing.

Never know what you're gonna get with 20-30 year old cars if you go that route. If you have any mechanic friends, bring them with for test drives, and if not, find a way to take cars you're considering to get inspected by someone first.

I wouldnt buy anything from the 90s, major rust issues, wiring issues, and the body styles just aren't my favorite. I think I would go early 80s if possible.

I know it's a little bit off topic but others have shared some of their dream muscle cars so thought I would add to the conversations. I always have said if I won the lottery I'd try to find a 1969 Dodge Charger either already restored or one that is in good enough shape to restore and paint that baby black or stock gold color they came in from the factory. That is one of the sexiest muscle cars ever made IMO. I could probably go for a Dodge Challenger from the 70's too as an alternative.

You know what you don't see many of, these days? Plymouth Prowlers.
OP should zig, while everyone else zags, and pick up one of those babies. I feel like you could probably get one pretty cheap.

Depends on how you define pretty cheap, most run mid/upper $30's

The have hit bottom and are on their way back up. It wasn't that long ago I was seeing a number of them for sale in the $12,000 - $20,000 range.

I think they will be a weird car. People didn't like how neutered they were when they were initially sold. But I still think most buyers garaged them and kept them low miles and good condition. So while I think they are relatively rare, they aren't rare in really good condition.

Most were stored and driven infrequently so they have low millage on them, I would guess many that purchased thought that the value would shoot up, did not happen. Most or worth less now than what they paid for them new, not much of a collector's car.

I looked at 4 different car sites, and they all had them listed in the mid/high $30K. Way over the OP's budget, but it would be a fun car to have for a drive if you had a place to store it.

Guilty pleasure waste of time for me is watching the auto auctions on TV. Each show you'll see some garaged car that someone bought and just stored. Sometimes only mileage in the hundreds (or even less) and they take a huge bath losing money on them. Always good for a laugh.

I love to watch the Mecum auctions, and would love to go to one, just to check out the cars. You can really get some great deals on Thursday or Friday, low millage cars that are not collectables that would be just fun to have and drive.

I like the Thursday/Friday stuff also. Some actual deals IMHO. Also, more fun to watch cars in a price range that you might imagine yourself participating in. Going to one is on my do list, not to buy but to tour the tents and look at the autos.

I only have one collector car, a 1987 Porsche 926S. Going to probably sell in on Bring a Trailer this summer. Only 42K miles and very nice "survivor" but was surprised to see what they were selling for, almost twice what they were a couple of years ago. Was skeptical when I looked at some for sale and asking prices but confirmed those by looking at BAT via actual sale prices.

Oh?

The one in the photo is a Challenger.
However, Dodge will sell you either a Charger or a Challenger with the Hellcat Redeye package.

If you could go to the Chrysler side and get it in a Pacifica then you'd have something....

I always have grand thoughts of the 80's/90's American sports cars. Then I drive one a soon remember how crap they really were. They have terrible interiors, poor fit/finish, and actually pretty slow.

If it was me, I'd look for something fun like a Honda s2000.

Yeah - nothing in the automotive world screams FUN like 2000s Honda.

To each of their own…
