Where are you getting it was contended they’re employees because of the scholarship? What a pathetic strawman.

The scholarship is just the current pay for the employee because of draconian regulations.

What makes them employees is being the most critical human capital (employees) in one of university’s revenue generating activities

It’s not about what they deserve. It’s about what the market will pay. Whether that’s $200 or $2 million

Those people you list should get as much as the market will pay them. If there’s an arbitrary rule preventing them from making a lot more, let’s talk about that rule. What is it?

There is a poster is this thread arguing that athletes are employees of the University

Do these NIL deals have a contract tied to them? Or is this all handshake/wink-wink type agreements?

Not exactly sure.
Exactly.

Here is a list of what I got along time ago:
1. Full Scholarship - Tuition, Books, Housing, Meals all taken care of (Housing is paid at the Dorm rate so if you find something cheaper you pocket the difference)
2. Pell Grant - Full amount available to use as spending money
3. NCAA Student Athlete Assistance Fund - $500/year to buy clothes
4. Cash for Sunday Dinner because it wasn't part of the meal plan
Makes me wish I would have walked on when asked. Thought it was just going to be more work but would be mostly on my own.

They're contracts and the contracts have to be submitted to the athletic department or the clearinghouse representing the athletic department.

That's why you won't see gambling, hard liquor, etc type sponsorships.

This is correct.

And??

They are imo, and Johnson vs NCAA should say the same.

But it’s not because they get scholarships. That’s just the current, antiquated compensation for their valuable labor

It's what ever the parties make it.

I could just go to a athlete and say "wear this Curt Schroeder CPA shirt during the next TV interview you do and I'll give you $10K"

I would have to assume they don't even have to truly provide a service, correct? I'd assume you could give a guy $500,000 just for the right to use his NIL, whether or not you actually do is another story.

Not a chance in hell this was offered to Brockington. He’d be stupid to turn that down. I mean…insanely stupid.

Something like 30% of NBA contracts are less than $1M/year. Healthy overseas contracts are around $500K/year.

The claims being floated around are absurd.
They absolutely are. There isn't anywhere near the money floating around as people seem to think there is.

The vast majority of these deals are 4 figures.

So like - Here's $50K to be in my Car Dealership commercial - pay the kid and then never actually schedule the commercial.

Yeah you could do that

Even if there was a requirement, take 10 seconds to make one paid instagram post. Paying someone to use their image is so simple and impossible to prove if you’re actually sincere in using the likeness.

I've certainly heard a few times that a decent amount of money was offered to IB. Nowhere near what's being rumored about with Hunter, but a decent chunk of money.

Why can’t they pick any business- have the athlete “ask” for funding in which he gets 75% and business gets 25%. Win-win
