WWE WrestleMania 34 Weekend Thread

Seems like worst case scenario to me. ****** match, crowd hates it, crowd hates Roman and both of his moves, but if there was one silver lining, it was that we’d have a champ that was there every night. Now we’re still stuck with Lesnar as champ, and Reigns didn’t use any of his WrestleMania buildup to actually get over (which I thought he was making progress on before tonight).

Someone with more knowledge than me explain why that happened.

There really is no logical explanation, but I can try and piece something together.

This is the fourth year Vince has tried to get Reigns over. It has had flashes here and there of working, but ultimately it has never fully worked and they never end up having the stones to go through with it.

Reigns' career is very similar to how The Rock's career started. Rocky Maivia was meant to be over from the moment he set foot in the WWE, but he ended up being so hated he got "Die Rocky Die" chants. It was so bad they turned him heel and put him in the Nation of Domination, where he had time to develop The Rock character without being center of attention. As NoD broke up, Rock got popular, and eventually they turned him face - for a few weeks when he sold out to Vince. By the time he split from Vince he was really over. This is how you build up a wrestler organically.

They have never wanted to take the time to build Roman Reigns organically. Instead, they dubbed him the man - except the crowd refuses to accept it, so ultimately they end up having to kill it. And nights like tonight will never help Reigns get over.

Thinking back, gotta admit it's obviously how freaking hard Reigns works and the show he puts on. If not for some rushed pushes and being shoved down our throats, the WWE universe should be loving Reigns.

I agree. For years I have not hated Reigns the worker. He works hard and has turned into a very capable in-ring performer. His character is just completely awful, though.

And honestly, while most people were not liking the idea of Reigns winning tonight, they were at least willing to accept it if it meant Lesnar going away - or, at the very least, not being a champion that shows up 10 times a year. And instead they assassinated what little character Reigns had by having him kick out of 5 F-5s. For some reason Vince thinks that makes someone look strong. Instead everyone is rolling their eyes.

Honestly, I don't know what they can possibly do to rebuild Reigns without turning him heel. Maybe they finally will, but I'm not putting any money on it.

He has to turn heel. I foresee Braun taking the title before or at summerslam and then Braun V Roman at Survivor series.

I've had a depressing thought overnight, something that's totally a "Vince McMahon troll move" - and it's worse than Roman Reigns being the champion:

Rumors are Bobby Lashley is on his way back to WWE. Vince would use this as his way to bring Bobby Lashley back - by putting the title on him.

That’s not going to happen. I bet this is just a desperation move to try to keep Brock.

34 peaked somewhere in the middle, did okay through Bliss/Jax & AJ/Nakamora and really crashed hard with the last 2 matches.

That kid with Braun is really dumb and the F5 thing with Roman and Brock retaining was almost unwatchable.

I thought the Rousey match was fun.

AJ Styles Match sucked in my opinion.

And what was that Jinder Mahal match?

The Miz is becoming my favorite wrestler. Hard worker , funny, good character.

Jinder is hilarious and a good character too. The only guy two guys that can actually be viable heels anymore are Miz and Jinder.

Rolling the R’s on maharaja? Classic.

Btw thank goodness Nakamura turned heal. I hate the hugging each other for a great match deal. To much of that last night.

He will still get cheered by 97% of the crowd unless he’s going up against Jinder or Miz. WWE is in a bad spot right now it’s going to be a long summer.

I agree. Although I liked the move. Very Rick Flair of him. One thing WWE is missing is comedy right now. The Santino's of the world. I can't think of any funny guys right now. I agree on the long summer

BTW I can't believe they let Cena get squashed like that. That was basically an old school squash match. I get that Taker can't wrestle anymore. However, I thought they should have used a different wrestler to get squashed.

It’s not that it was a horrible match - it’s that it’s not what we were expecting from a Styles-Nakamura match. We were expecting a match that potentially could steal the show, but instead we got what on any other evening would be a “good” match. There is a reason for that: AJ Styles is suffering from an injury, significant enough to where the match itself was in doubt leading up to WM. If this was more publicly known it would have tempered expectations for the match.

Actually, storyline wise it made complete sense for Cena to get squashed like that. This match was never about an all-time classic match between two WWE legends, it was about Cena being a **** for weeks calling out Taker, only to fall victim to his own hubris. Taker burying Cena was a great call.

Some thoughts the day after:

-In general a 5 hour WM while fun got me thinking a few times "when is this over?" Matches seemed shorter which is harder to sell a story some times. Just too many matches. I know there is a lot of talent right now and you have two live weekly shows to keep going, but it was frankly just too much.

-Reigns has to go full heel or just go away.

-Lesnar is fine with me part time, but its becoming harder and harder to do things with him.

-Surprised they had Shinsuke lose...but him turning was a nice twist. Can he be a good heel? Usually the best guys when heel are excellent on the mic (Miz, CM Punk, Rollins) ect. However, Shinsuke might be able to pull it off with his character even if English isn't his first language.

-Rousey looked really polished for her first match. She did some moves if not done right would really hurt herself.

-HHH and Stephanie are pretty damn amazing. Both great promoters, can sell a story or set a hook, and have done a lot to get people over.

-Taker's entrance is still the most iconic in history. The guy has earned the right to take as long as he wants.

-Interesting to see what Rollins does from here.

-Charlotte Flair did things I didn't know she was capable of doing. Excellent match.

-There is no way in hell the random kid with Braun was random. However, if that kid some day becomes a wrestler, he could tout holding a title at age 10 haha.

I still don't think so. To squash areguably your biggest star for someone who is basically retired. I mean I get the story line. However, why was that a story line. That made no sense. Just to be honest. Why would Cena talk crap about the taker. Only to get squashed.

He's been my favorite (besides Punk) in the last 10 years. The guy has always done whatever WWE has wanted. Any storyline he's in he works his ass off. He's not the best wrestler, but he can take a punch. He's great on the mic as well.
