Sam Cook

He may choose NDSU over ISU! If your choices were: ISU, Kansas, NDSU or UNI, right now, where would you go? You would probably win more games in one season at NDSU than you would in a career at ISU! Sorry to be so negative but I am being completely honest right now.

The vast majority of college players are not NFL bound, I would hope the value of your education for your career afterwards would figure in here somewhere. I can see NDSU for wins but I hope and believe that the ISU degree would be worth more overall.

This is what bugs me with recruiting in the state of Iowa now, "let's get the kid to walk-on". I think back to when Mac recruited Iowa and had success and wonder how many of those kids; the Ryan Kock, Brett Meyer, etc type kids would even be recruited by Iowa State now? If there is a V or D on your helmet well then he must be ok. Missing out on talent in this state and thinking "well they will walk-on" is a bad mindset.

For every Bret Meyer, Ryan Kock type kids there were also Fabian Dodd, Collins Eboh, Travis Ferguson, Jordan Goos, Kody Kuehl, Mike Main, Landon Streit, and that was just the 2004 recruiting class. That's 7 Iowa kids in 1 class that had no business being offered a scholarship. Throw in the Brandon Cooks, Josh Greibahn, Nate Mechaelsen, Matt Scherbring, Taylor Schrage, and John Tjaden's in 2003 that were all misses from Iowa - I'd say that the start of the downfall for DMac was that he was TOO loyal to the state of Iowa.

And why offer a kid that is willing to walk on. If he commits to Iowa on scholarship, then we dropped the ball. If he gets zero other offers, invite him to walk on. Use the scholarship somewhere else.

No room for favors.

Iowa State currently has 6 players in the NFL. North Dakota State currently has 6 players in the NFL. UNI has 2. After this year, NDSU will have more players in the NFL than ISU.

I'd like to see the staff focus a little more at instate kids to play positions like OL, TE, DL and LB. IMO Iowa HS kids that that aren't obvious recruits like Lazard are undervalued.

Cook might be worth a scholarship, but he seems pretty limited. At 5'10" and 210 he might be able to put on 10-20 lbs. He already looks pretty thick in the legs. So he may only project to play FB or MLB. ISU isn't likely to use a scholarship on a blocking FB.

Conversely, I look at Isaiah Kramme from Ankeny and see a kid with the measurables to play a number of positions in college. At 6'3" and 195 lbs. with 4.5 speed, he could stay at his current weight and play WR or safety. If his body can take some weight, he could grow into a TE, LB or DE.

Kramme is pretty good. No idea if he has any offers or whatever but I've seen him play and he was one of the better players in central Iowa (although that definitely doesn't necessarily translate to Big 12 quality)

I've been saying this all along about Iowa kids but get repeatedly crucified by the texas lovers on here. I don't think cook is a scholarship guy but I would say that Kramme definitely is.
Dafney from Valley and Morris from Dowling should get offers as well.

I love to see Iowa kids on our roster too. There are many kids who fly under the radar in the state, who by measurables, size etc. look to be the part. I think what separates Texas kids or other Southern kids in general, is the length of the season, level of competition they play week in and week out, and their mental preparedness to play at this level.

I think there are a few kids on the current roster for instance, who may look the part, but when the lights go on, they mentally are not there or the stage is too big. So, what I am saying is the mental aspect/confidence playing in front of 40,000 and being in the right spot on the field is not new to many Texas kids. It's a whole new world to an Iowa kid from Bug Tussel, Iowa. And I say that, being from a small town in Iowa. I root for those kids (loved it when Lane Danielson did what he did) but for every Lane, there are 4 others from small town Iowa who are questionable to receive Div I schollies to start with. Doesn't mean they aren't great walk on/special teams contributors, but Big 12 caliber full time position players are few and far between. The question is, is the 4th level Texas kid who has that experience, maybe not as talented as the Blue Chippers in the state, are they as motivated to play at Iowa State as a small town Iowa kid with a huge heart who bleeds Cardinal and Gold? Fine line between the two, especially in the Big 12. Not so much in the Big 10.

If you go to NDSU, that's the end of your football career. If you go to ISU, maybe you won't be winning 11 games a year, but at least standout performers here get a chance in the NFL.

Ndsu will get 2 drafted this year so they'll be up to 8. So not much for ending careers!!

Fyi on Cook won 195lb class 3a wrestling. Uni and ndsu both showing interest. Iowa state should prob stay with those 3*s from Florida lbs tho
