Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

pooling of tv rights across 70+ schools absolutely threatens existence of conference HQ, at least as we know them

Pooling of rights to make money off rights is the primary function of conference HQ. Then scheduling. Both of which are at a level above conference HQ in super pooling

Where are the offices of NFL conferences and divisions?
LOL, that is quite the take. Stripping conference HQs of their ability to negotiate media rights deals and scheduling is exactly what needs to be done in order to quit leaving billions of dollars on the table and to get control of CFB away from ESPN and Fox.

Greggy Boy and Tony Boy will still have plenty of things to do.

Here is latest list of what schools are spending on their athletic programs, it does not break it down on why they are doing it, but gives very good insight into how much money some schools are taking from their general fund to support athletics. The last column shows the percentage of the total the school is kicking in, at ISU its 1.66%.

Can you show were it says the % allocated amount is coming directly from the school and how that percentage is reached. Totally not calling you out just don’t see anywhere where it discusses what those charts on the table mean

You realize you’re agreeing, right?

The way it reads the percentage on the right is what the school is supplying the athletic department, as a percentage of their total athletic budget, These are 2024 numbers, the latest that are available. Looks like if you zeroed out all school support for athletes from the general fund of each university, ISU would come in around 30th or so. Many of the schools listed above us are receiving quite a bit more from the university than ISU does, less than $2 million in student fees.
This would not include NIL moneys from outside sources as they are not part of the athletic budget.

Yeah but can you show where it says that? Not doubting you just want to read it because when you click on that column fort he numbers they each have individual notes on them that are saying radically different things

yes, upon review of what exactly you were replying to.
They won’t have much to do right now without handling the revenue mechanisms and scheduling.

Perhaps if there’s conference level CBA to regulate and govern, they’ll still be employed. Those will be unlikely if conferences are no longer sharing revenue equally, and if they’re still sharing equally, pooling is nothing more than a Pyrrhic victory

Pooling of rights didn’t threaten the Big 8 or Big 10 conference headquarters before.

Can't help you, the numbers are not broken down anymore than a total of what the university is providing its athletic program. If you want any more information you are going to have to take a deep dive into the what each school is not only providing but what the funds were used for. So for a coach that was bought out of a contract, it does not say where that money comes from. If you click on to a school, you can see where they are spending money for each program and where they are getting their money from ticket sales, media ect.

That chart just screams out loud how poorly the BOR and legislature treat the 3 public ADs in this state...
The BOR and the legislature are never going to treat the three state universities the same. They still provide EIU with more money per student than the other two. The is no doubt in my mind that if ISU was not in the picture, the state would be kicking in more money to EIU for athletics, the only thing stopping them is that people that support ISU would raise hell. UNI gets lost in shuffle, of the battle between support between ISU and EIU.
Look back to the push in the legislature to make each athletic department self funded after EIU achieved it. We started to hear whispers that the state was looking into cutting funds for ISU, within a couple of years, ISU was also self funded and the whole story went away. It was never brought up again the UNI was never self funded and never be.

No they weren’t. It was nationwide.
Completely different era that far back. TV (money) didn’t drive things.

Conferences/conference HQ have become much more important (and expensive) since rights were ceded to conference level. The Big 12 and ACC were/are essentially corporate marriages for TV rights. The P2 now too, particularly national BIG

Returning to national pooling is stripping the conference of that importance

You are wrong. Big time. TV money most certainly did drive it then, especially when cable began in late 1970s.

Stop it, GREED is what got us here, nothing more. The B10 started it with BTN, and since then the entire system has gotten out of control. Once the B10 and SEC started poaching schools to enhance their media deal everything began to fall apart. Can you or anyone else say the B10 is really better off now than what it was before? Money wise without a doubt, but travel, the conference standing and scheduling, what is good for the athletes, not talking NIL but the schedule they now have is much worse.

I wonder how many schools that jumped for one conference to another would go back, but cannot afford too because of the money difference. Has it been good for Nebraska, Missouri, UCLA, and a few other schools besides the money. Take the money out of the equation, which you cannot do, and most are worst off than before.

I would argue that allowing conferences to do their own TV rights has created the worst instability of any sports organization. Once the Big 8 got that right, then Oklahoma and Nebraska started using their leverage and creating instability. Within 10 years, conferences started to blow up.

I’d say those three schools are exactly the same as they were before.

Yeah the Big Ten is better off, the athletes can be compensated, they can transfer when they want, they travel in style and get a ton of perks.

Yep it’s pretty much better

you must have misquoted, my post wasn’t about what got us here

More prisoners dilemma than greed btw, although there’s overlap on those motivations

This started long before BTN. The Big 8 and SWC (rip) merger was all about making more money. ACC taking the meat of the Big East (rip) similar

Don’t hate the players, hate the game. With no shared balance sheet, schools are fundamentally competing with each other.

We need to find a way to play the game differently. For example, raise capital to make top P2 better offer than they can get sharing revenue equally with other P2
