Saying we are fortunate to have Pollard and he has performed very well in tough times isn't saying that we would be totally screwed if we had someone else.
What would be helpful in these discussions would be to point to someone, a program, doing it right. Doing it better. Who do we aspire to be more like?
Well, I work to earn money and provide. I eat to stay alive. But, since this is a ‘business’ and ISU supposedly cannot compete, then what happens to non-competitive businesses in the ‘real world’?

Iowa State is not funded with full coffers from the conference media deal like TOE. It isn't getting any state or university support, zero dollars. It isn't located in Texas where support dollars get pumped out of the ground. It has a notoriously small and stingy base of donors. And somehow it is still one of the top two or three athletics programs overall in the Big 12, if not #1.
Maybe people can close their eyes and wish really hard and tomorrow morning when they wake up we're Ohio State.
That leads us to our other "untouchable" target, the broader fanbase. What portion of our limited resources should be put into getting our non-donors who are reluctant to support the AD. Personally, I am coming to the conclusion that it's a lost cause.
Pollard would have a hard time at any of the better jobs out there. I don't think the donors and uppity Alumni would tolerate his personality.
Gene Smith looked at the problems facing ISU and decided he wanted to be somewhere else. ADJP decided to face the ISU challenges head on and not run from them.
Compete doesn't just mean win NC's. There are levels of compete.
My business doesn't "compete" with large CPA firms and I don't aspire to be a large CPA firm. I am happy with my niche.
Pollard isn't going to over extend the AD and put it in a bad position which might cause it to cease to exist.

I agree with everything you wrote. Trying to get at what the answer is to a situation where ISU cannot compete with other schools in this new age. Does it continue to ‘go thru the motions’? If so, why?
You mean they wouldn’t want to be talked down to and told that whatever they’re getting is the best they can possibly expect?
It's really not that hard to figure out why...which also is part of the issues I have.
I'd like to see alcohol sales in Trice. I'd also like the AD to help players attain and grow their NIL money in conjunction with University logos that somehow shared revenue with the general fund and paid the players. I'd also like to see more effort through marketing towards We Will. Mostly I'd like to see Jamie share the ownership over how funds are used if the fans are going to be expected to foot the bill. I'd also like to see proactive contracts with NIL as to protect the investment of fans/business when players leave after receiving funds.

Our athletic department gets exactly what we deserve operating this way. It’s insane.
