He’s probably the one we would throw extra at. A guy who had more than one year and can be that leader as a strong safety or Star position.
I hope on Defense we can keep:
- Jamison Patton: he's a local Des Moines guy and playing for the hometown team being a native Iowa guy has to help some.
- Caleb Bacon: finished the year great and think he would fit a 4-2 defensive line scheme awesome as a rush end
- Kooper Ebel if we can pay him some, he's also an Iowan
- Marcus Neal: he will require a bag of funds to retain, I think he's worth it though.. awesome player.
- Alijah Carnell I would like to keep too as I think he has high upside

I mean, what’s worse?

Players transferring after their coach bails on them ?

Or

Players bailing to go to the NFL ?

Pretty sure Bacon is leaving.

If you subscribe to the idea these players are loyal sons forever true, transferring. Going to the NFL is like graduating early and getting the promotion. And there is zero chance that NFL team will play Iowa State.

in 2018 maybe.

Now, it’s a Business.

So if Rocco is making $1.5 Million at Iowa State, and his coach and staff who recruited him and trusted him to start says he can go to Penn State for a year and make $3 Million, isn’t that like getting a promotion?

If he transfers to TxTech, is that a promotion?

When a player leaves and can potentially play against Iowa State the next season, it's worse than if they go the NFL.

Would your wife be ok if you go get some from the neighbors wife, because she is younger, hotter, and more fun?

Business is business, I also know a lot of business owners that hope their competition goes broke. I dont know any businesses that hope their competitors make a fortune while they struggle. Pretty sure the Chevy CEO would be very happy to see Ford go bankrupt.

Going up to the Pros is different, it is a different level, a different league, really a different business, to me it is different. I am sure Chevy doesnt care if McDonalds succeeds, its a different business.

It is the way of College athletics today, that doesnt mean we have to like it or support it.

If you leave one sales job for a bigger sales job and make $1.5 million more for ONE YEAR and compete against your former colleagues and company, what’s the difference?

Let’s remember,

NONE If these players would transfer if Matt didn’t leave. At least non of the high profile players.

Comparing football players transferring to a wife leaving a husband is comical.

Transferring to Iowa or a Big 12 school would be worse. Yes.

But I don’t fault these kids for leaving after their coach bailed on them.

So I'm confused. You asked originally which is worse, transferring or leaving early for the NFL.

It seems like you think leaving early for the NFL is worse, except in certain circumstances like going to Iowa or a Big12 school? And you haven't actually said going you think leaving early for the NFL is worse.

This one is just weird to me because from my non-biased ISU perspective, this LB room was atrocious and I felt probably wouldn't play at most, if any, P5 schools outside of Iowa State.

Then I got to thinking, I wonder if it's scheme related. Rogers LB's at Wazzu were typically slightly shorter and slightly lighter than our LBs last year. Now that we are going to a 4 man front, I wonder if the idea will be to try and trade off a little more weight for a little more speed.
