***2026 Minnesota Vikings***

What's really frustrating is the complete lack of adjustment from the coaching staff handling McCarthy. His level of play in games was certainly showing up in practice, but rather than adjust the scheme or the play calling earlier during the pre-season, KOC essentially said screw it, let's roll with it. Now he is finally admitting some guilt about that publicly, but I'm still not convinced he is going to change how he calls the games. It's been blatantly obvious to anyone watching that the current game plan isn't working, so he's either blind to it, or pride won't let him change.
I've complained a lot about this also, but apparently it did finally get heard:

Still though, I'm not going in expecting a different end result.

Yes and no. The scout on him was that he excelled in PA, which is a staple of KOCs offense.

As for the inability to layer throws and be consistently accurate on intermediate and short routes, that's not lack of fit with a specific offense. That means you're probably not an NFL QB.
That was always the sticking point for me too -- he did do well in PA, but he wasn't the focus of what was going to kill you in the MICH offense. Their PA also wasn't, like, frequent 30+ bombs downfield either, which is what KOC heavily prefers with guys like JJ and Addison.

The issue on those right now with JJM isn't the playcalling or really even the decisions on the throws -- it's purely the throwing accuracy being unusably poor.

From most assessments what he's doing pre-snap is fine. I'd agree his decision on throws is hit and miss, but what you'd expect from a first year starter.

The wild inaccuracy is not what you'd expect from any NFL QB on any roster. It's that bad. And the KOC statements about how his mechanics and accuracy are great in practice then they basically fall apart in games is not encouraging. That's a problem that is pretty hard to fix.

Even in the Michigan days, McCarthy always gave the vibe to me as one of those prodigies at an early age that gets tons and tons of coaching, has the mental coach from day 1 in college, and he's just a very manufactured QB that's never faced all that much real adversity coming up. If you're going to build the profile of a guy that looks the part then gets into the highest level of competition and suddenly gets the yips, this is probably the profile.

Washington is mega ass, but I couldn't help but notice how much better this offense looked with a significantly shrunk down gameplan. Lots of rushing. Lots of shorter plays and shorter routes. Things that looked to me like simplified reads and windows to work through. The game was made easier on JJM and he performed acceptably in that form.

I feel like I've been asking for that all season and now got to see the example. The offense looked fine this way.

Last week the coaching staff said JJM's issues were their fault because they never simplified things. Probably coach speak but hopefully this game gave him some confidence.

Didn't get to watch but sounds like they got some good execution on both sides. That's new, I like it, do more!

Washington sucks but Daniel’s did return and the basic things JJM and the offense were failing to do looked 100x better. A roller coaster is fine and is a bit to be expected. It just can’t be 2-3 games if complete and total incompetence. This was highly encouraging.

Jefferson just sitting there staring into space. We aren’t even trying to get him involved. Can’t blame him when he asks for a trade if we continue to go with McCarthy next season.

Then he goes through progressions, sees a busted coverage and actually hits it...albeit somewhat poorly, but he did connect on it.

Jefferson finally gets a TD catch and it gets called back. He's got to be near boiling over...
