Let’s dive in.

For starters, the top of the Big 12 is at 8.5 in a three-way tie between Arizona State, K-State and Texas Tech, while the bottom of the league in Oklahoma State and West Virginia is at 5.0.
On top of it, there are another five teams – Iowa State, Baylor, BYU, Kansas and Utah – that are each at 7.5.
That’s eight teams, which is literally half of the league, that are separated by one win at the top.
For reference, the SEC’s top teams (Alabama, Georgia and Texas) at 9.5 with Mississippi State at the bottom at 3.5. In the Big 10, Ohio State and Oregon are at 10.5 while Purdue is at 3.
This isn’t to say the Big 12 doesn’t have a juggernaut, although some might claim that – I’ll hold off until the games are here on that.
What it does say is that the league is going to be just as competitive as it was last year, when nine team’s were in contention for the Big 12 championship game going into the last week of the regular season.
Looking further down the list, Sonny Dykes and TCU are sitting at 6.5 wins, just two seasons removed from playing the national championship game. That’s a wildcard in the grand scheme of this season – one that Iowa State will face on the road November 8.
Another of those road matchups for Iowa State in Colorado come in at 6.0, with what Deion Sanders and the Buffs will have to replace in the losses of Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders.
There’s plenty of time for speculation, and Iowa State’s schedule is considerably tougher this year, but it says a lot about where the program is for that number to be where it’s at right now.
Hopefully, these next 100 days go by pretty quick. That’s when Iowa State will open the year against one of those conference favorites in K-State.
