AMES — There wasn’t anything pretty about it, but Iowa State finally put one in the “win” column in front of a sea of gold on Saturday afternoon in Jack Trice Stadium. Just under 55,000 fans wore gold to honor fallen Cyclone women’s golfer Celia Barquin Arozamena showed up to watch the Cyclones top Akron by a 26-13 final.

Iowa State’s defense held the Zips to 244 yards and only 2.9 yards per rush.

It was a good thing too, as the offense stalled time and time again. The Cyclones committed two turnovers and settled for three field goals, but were able to hold on for the win.

David Montgomery’s 107 yards and a touchdown on 4.7 yards yards per carry highlighted Iowa State’s offense. Zeb Noland completed 26-of-34 passes for 233 yards and a touchdown. Hakeem Butler caught six passes for 88 yards, which included his third touchdown reception of the season.

Walk-on kicker Connor Assalley was 4-for-4 on field goals.

Defensive end JaQuan Bailey had seven tackles, 1.5 sacks and forced two fumbles to lead the Cyclones up front. Safeties Lawrence White and Greg Eisworth each had nine tackles to lead Iowa State.

Iowa State now enters the teeth of its Big 12 schedule next week with a road trip to TCU. The Cyclones will travel to Oklahoma State in two weeks. TCU plays Texas later today, while the Cowboys will host Texas Tech.
