Will Watson, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound defensive back out of Tampa (Fla.) Jefferson is a former state champion. He can also play multiple positions.
Watson told CycloneFanatic.com on Friday morning that he’s a Cyclone.
"I committed three days ago," Watson said. "They play in the Big 12. That gives me a chance to go against some great offenses like Oklahoma, Texas and Texas Tech every week."
Watson, who’s high school team won Florida’s 3A state championship last season, has experience at cornerback and strong safety, although he did play more safety as a junior. It is still unknown as to what he’ll play at Iowa State.
"It is up to me," Watson said. "I play both and they like how I’m fast. They said that I’m a special player because I play two different positions."
"It really doesn’t matter to me. As long as I am on the field."
Watson ended his junior season with 53 tackles and four interceptions. He also returned two kicks and a punt for touchdowns.
Credit Iowa State assistant coach and Florida recruiting ace Shane Burnham for securing this commitment. Watson said that along with Iowa State’s spot in the Big 12 Conference, Burnham was a major selling point for Paul Rhoads’ program.
"He has treated me like family," Watson said. "He told me that I can really have a great impact on the program because the defense fits. He is another reason why I committed to Iowa State."
Watson will begin two-a-days on Monday, as Jefferson will begin its quest to defend its state title on Aug. 26 vs. Tampa Tech.
"The toughest part for us will be getting out of our district," Watson said. "We probably have the hardest district in the state."
Watson chose Iowa State over offers from Bowling Green, Ball State, UAB, Bethune-Cookman and Youngstown State.
