Welcome to the Big 12 Buzz! Things are going to look a little different during the offseason but that doesn’t mean I can’t share what’s on my mind this week in the Big 12.
Tech’s Big Gamble
By now, you have most likely heard about the whole Brendan Sorsby situation at Tech. For us Iowa State fans, we are all too familiar with a quarterback placing bets (looking at you Hunter Dekkers).
First of all, what a quitter. A real gambler doesn’t stop. He makes an even bigger bet to try and cover his losses. Of course, I am just kidding so for the folks out there, don’t get your panties into a wad.
This is really just unfortunate for both sides here. Tech came into the offseason, knowing they needed to upgrade to quarterback position, especially after watching that playoff game against Oregon, where they offense did next to nothing, they had to go out and get a quarterback and to their credit, they got one of the top two or three out of the transfer portal with Brendan Sorsby.
But little did they know or maybe anyone else know for that matter, that he was dealing with this. It sucks for Tech because they paid millions of dollars to bring Sorsby to Lubbock and I know that Cody Campbell wipes his ass with $100 dollar bills but now they could be left scrambling.
The reports do say that he made bets back in 2022 when he was at Indiana, and he bet on Indiana to win but one of those games, he did play in which to me makes things a lot more dicey.
Now you got the NCAA involved and when it comes to them, they are either going to drop the hammer or drop the ball. It’s one thing to bet on different sports but to bet on the sport you play in and bet in a game you are involved in kind of changes things.
It was in small amounts over time, and this was four years ago where he was just a backup but still, you got to be smarter than that. I get it, he was young and dumb but you got to smarten up. it’s not worth all the bullshit that can come back to get you and it may come back to haunt him here depending on how this plays out.
At some point we need to address the fact that everywhere you look there is a gambling advertisement. A few years ago, that was unheard of and now I can’t even take a dump in my house without seeing a gambling ad on my phone or television.
I am surprised that there isn’t a promo code including Sorbsy’s name to get cash back on your next bet. Am I surprised that college football players are out there placing bets? No, because when you are constantly are getting gambling ads, it’s hard to blame a 21-yeard old kid not to place a bet.
Twining in Miami
First of all, I had no idea Brett Yormark even had a brother, let alone a twin brother. To me that was shocking enough but now you have Miami interested in potentially making his brother, Michael, their new athletic director and if you are Jim Phillips, the ACC commissioner, you may be sweating more than a whore church right now.
Obviously, there’s going to be a lot of speculation if Michael gets the job at Miami. Now, I am not ready to go all in and say, Miami is a lock to the Big 12 or anything like that, but I am sure other outlets will say that and talk about how their friend’s cousin’s uncle, has a source who says Miami is going to the Big 12. And hey, if you want to throw shit against a wall and hope it sticks, be my guest but why throw shit against a clean wall? Not me.
Now if Michael does get the job, and Miami is interested in making a move, I don’t know if it would be to the Big 12, but I would say that obviously, the Big 12 would have the edge due to the fact that his twin brother is the commissioner of the Big 12. But we will see how things play out.
