Multiple 2022 starters charged in gambling investigation

Running back Jirehl Brock, tight end DeShawn Hanika, defensive lineman Isaiah Lee and offensive lineman Jake Remsburg have each been charged wih tampering with records as part of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation’s probe into sports gambling.

The Des Moines Register‘s Travis Hines was first to report the news Thursday afternoon.

Lee is accused of placing a total of 115 wagers, including 26 on 12 Iowa State games in which he participated. Lee is also alleged to have bet on Texas to beat the Cyclones in a 2021 game that ISU won, 30-7.

Brock is accused of placing a total of 1,327 wagers and allegedly placed four bets on three Iowa State football games using an online wagering account under a different name. He appeared in two of the football games he is accused of wagering on, including the 2022 Cy-Hawk game, as well as the team’s matchup against Kansas State last season. Brock is also accused of betting on 13 Iowa State basketball games.

Hanika is accused of placing a total of 288 wagers, including 70 on Iowa State basketball.

Remsburg is alleged to have placed 273 wagers, including six on NCAA sanctioned college football and basketball games. None of his wagers were alleged to be linked to Iowa State spoting events.

An Iowa State Athletics spokesperson released the following statement in the wake of Thursday’s news: “Since becoming aware of potential NCAA eligibility issues related to sports wagering by several of our student-athletes back in May, Iowa State University has been actively working to address these issues with the involved student-athletes, and that process remains ongoing. We will continue to support our student-athletes as our compliance staff works with the NCAA to sort out questions surrounding their future eligibility for athletics competition.”
