Recruiting Roundup: January 10, 2019

Recruiting has been slow with the early signing period complete, bowl season and the dead period that started December 17th and ends on Friday.  Iowa State signed a 20 man class during the early period that ranks as the No. 43 class by 247Sports.com composite team rankings.  Jared broke down the class back in mid-December, which you can read here.  Quite a few names are off the board for the 2019 class as 65 percent of expected FBS level players signed in December.

BASKETBALL LATEST:

*** ISU point guard signee Tre Jackson (Blythewood, S.C.) received a rating boost this week, up 21 spots in the 247 Composite to the No. 21 PG in 2019 and 118 spots overall to No. 222.

*** The Cyclones watched class of 2020 prospects LJ Cryer and Eddie Lampkin (Both of Katy, Texas), according to top100talent.com.  No offer has been extended yet to either player.

FOOTBALL LATEST:

*** A top name to watch for filling out the class of 2019 is defensive end Zaylin Wood (Bowdon, Ga.), who decommitted from Temple on Saturday.  Wood had been committed since July 4th and picked up his Cyclone offer on August 28th.  His profile lists over 20 offers but ISU is his only power 5 offer.  A recent recruit who had a similar situation from the last class is starting middle linebacker Mike Rose (Broadview Heights, Ohio), who was just named a Freshman All-American by The Athletic this week.  Rose flipped from Ball State and had no power offers.

*** Iowa State offered OLB Allen Smith (Loganville, Ga.) this week, a new target to watch for the class of 2019.  He has scheduled an official visit to Ames for the weekend of January 25th.  ISU is the first Big 12 offer of his 9 power conference offers.  He is currently warm to ISU and Louisville on his 247 Sports profile, for whatever that is worth.

*** Another new 2019 target is Ventura College wide receiver Brandon Jordan (Carpinteria, Calif.).  Louisville and Fresno State have offered and he took an official visit to Louisville in December.

*** A new high-interest target in the class of 2020 is tight end Luke Lachey (Columbus, Ohio), who also has Cincinnati, Kentucky and Ohio State at the top.  He has offers from all but Ohio State, as well as Toledo, Bowling Green, Princeton and Yale.  ISU offered on August 18th, 2018.

*** The Cyclones offered 2020 cornerback Myles Slusher (Broken Arrow, Okla.) this week.  He holds 12 P5 offers, including Baylor, Kansas, Oklahoma State and Texas out of the Big 12.

*** Iowa State lost one commit on signing day, as wide receiver Nathaniel Beal III (Houston, Texas) flipped to Virginia.  Beal originally pledged to ISU on May 25th after being offered last December.  He took a visit on May 4th and an official visit the weekend of December 7th.
