Tonight Steve Prohm will get his first taste of one of the most underrated rivalries in all of college basketball when the Kansas Jayhawks visit Hilton Coliseum for Big Monday. It will be the Cyclones’ second consecutive week with an 8 p.m. tip on ESPN’s marquee game of the night and hopefully this one can match last week’s classic with Oklahoma.
Monday’s Big 12 teleconference further solidified how underrated this rivalry is in my mind after Kansas coach Bill Self wasn’t even asked a single question about the Cyclones.
For some reason, some people have moved on to Saturday’s Big 12/SEC challenge that will pit the Jayhawks up against the Kentucky Wildcats. That is sure to be a fun game (even with Kentucky being a bit down) but it still seems odd that people south of Iowa have forgotten about tonight’s game.
Prohm definitely hasn’t forgotten about it and he is ready for the test the Jayhawks present.
“Well I think we’ll get their best game,” Prohm said. “We’ll get their best road game of the year in my opinion. The atmosphere with the great teams, whether its road or home, brings out the best in those teams. Coach Self will have them extremely prepared but it’s a big game I think for both teams because it’s the next game. Hopefully being at home and having Hilton behind us, hopefully that helps.”
After that the attention once again turned to this weekend’s Big 12/SEC Challenge and Prohm’s mentor Texas A&M coach Billy Kennedy. Those are quotes for another day.
Those of us in Iowa aren’t forgetting about a big game tonight.
