ISU collapses at K-State, Mark Mangino

Mark Mangino has composed precisely 1,872 tweets since he joined Twitter in March of 2012.

None went viral — until the former Iowa State offensive coordinator fired off a single missive in the wake of the Cyclones’ collapse Saturday at Kansas State.

ISU fumbled away a 21-point halftime lead and made controversial decisions down the stretch.

Mangino (@KeepSawinWood) apparently then typed this: “There is no doubt at all…The Fat Lady is singing!”

 A strange day got stranger.

Mangino hasn’t spoken on the record to central Iowa  media since Cyclones coach Paul Rhoads announced two days after the Baylor loss that he no longer was on staff.

“Mark and I couldn’t get on the same page on a few important items,” Rhoads said that day.

Little has been said about the situation since.

But Mangino — whose son, Tommy, remains on staff as ISU’s wide receivers coach — broke the near-silence in a way that invited the ire of many Cyclones fans.

A minority seemed to enjoy the Tweet.

Many more responded sharply, and/or made jokes about Mangino’s personal appearance.

The former Kansas head coach retweeted dozens of the latter variety.

Then Mangino’s timeline fell silent again — as national outlets picked up the story and ran with it.

The Cyclones fell to 3-8 overall and 2-6 in Big 12 play. They close the 2015 season Saturday at West Virginia.
