INJURIES: Kamari Cotton-Moya likely out for the year

AMES — On a crazy news day surrounding the Iowa State football program, a major injury development is being overlooked.

That’s the fact that sophomore free safety Kamari Cotton-Moya, arguably the best player on Iowa State’s defense, is probably out for the season with what Paul Rhoads is calling a “serious hamstring injury” that was suffered on the final drill of last Wednesday’s practice.

“If it can be done, it will get done by our medical staff with his attempts to get all of the treatment that he can,” Rhoads said. “It will be a stretch that we will see him the rest of the season.”

Cotton-Moya, who did not play in Saturday’s 45-27 loss to Baylor, has been removed from Iowa State’s depth chart. Senior Darian Cotton is being listed as his replacement with redshirt freshman De’Monte Ruth backing him up.

Even after missing Saturday, Cotton-Moya still ranks fourth on Iowa State’s team in tackles with 40 on the season.

LAZARD HOPEFUL

Iowa State’s best offensive player, sophomore wide receiver Allen Lazard, also missed Saturday’s loss with a rotator cuff injury. Rhoads called Lazard “day-to-day.”

“He’s got a good ways to go, I’ll be honest with you,” Rhoads said. “But they think there is a chance. As long as they tell me there is a chance, I know how Allen is going to respond to that so we will hold out hope.”

OTHERS

*** Defensive linemen Trent Taylor, Jhaustin Thomas and Gabe Luna all received MRI’s on an ankle last week. The news on all three Cyclones came back positive and it’s possible they can play in Saturday night’s 6 p.m. kick vs. Texas (on FS1). Rhoads noted that Taylor will practice today.

*** Defensive tackle Bobby Leath suffered a concussion vs. TCU and is hopeful for Texas.

*** Senior reserve cornerback Kenneth Lynn has been suspended from the team for the rest of the season for violating team rules.
